The ride is being coordinated by Polly Koch. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 10:00 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy, but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. It is an out-and-back ride, so turn around as you wish. The entire route out and back is around 22 miles. Pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two. When you reach the end of Heeney Road as it rejoins Route 9, please be aware of traffic turning onto Heeney Road, and stay to the side of the road.

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif;color:#26282A">

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif;color:#26282A">As the weather may not be conducive to a picnic, let's leave it as an informal gathering at North Pond Park in Silverthorne after the ride. It starts at River Point, approximately 69 miles from Summit County. To get there drive East on I70 to 470 South. Take the 285 exit East. When you get to the stop light for River Point Parkway be in the right lane and turn right. The parking is on the left soon after the turn. They are building a new office building and the parking is to the left of the building. You should not go across the bridge. The bike path is across the grass about 20 feet. (They have blocked the stairs.) There is no restroom at the start, but once on the rec-path they are numerous. Once on the path you can go left and across the bike bridge to the rec-path. Turn left and head South. Ride as far as you wish. A good goal is Chatfield Reservoir. Riding to the top of the dam and returning is about 20 miles. Plan to meet at 10 am, ready to ride.

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">Afterwards you can drive over the bridge and join others for lunch at Panera's and go shopping at the Costco nearby.

<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif">

Sent from Mail for Windows

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6543037625846236591.post-14876652686457608982023-05-09T16:00:00.000-06:002023-05-09T16:01:00.160-06:00FW: School Rodeo

OOPS!
The ride that we have planned for Mon 8/29 is a ride to Fremont Pass up the new rec path. I would suggest parking at the west end of Frisco. Riding from there to where the trail splits (right goes to Vail pass) continue straight to the new section of the rec path that goes south toward Fremont Pass. Watch for sand on the road and grates at the edges.

Due to the steepness of Rt. 91 it is easy to start going too fast on your way down so please use caution. The return from the top of Fremont Pass is on the right side of the highway. At the new bridge stay right and use the ramp to enter the rec path. Watch for riders on the bridge. Please remember we are the ambassadors of good biking etiquette -:)

I would encourage everyone to bring chairs since seating at the west end of Frisco is limited. Please bring a drink and sandwich and something to share with you fellow riders.

See you on Monday morning! If it is raining at 9AM, please consider the ride cancelled.
Thanks,
Pat Crum
Next week's ride, 8/22 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin, or Loveland Pass. Your choice!! We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 AM.

I suggest avoiding the rec path through Keystone as more tourists may make it busy. The suggested way is to turn right on Elk Drive going through the fence to Keystone Ranch Road and going left through the River Run Area of Keystone (groups often gather back up in River Run since this is convenient for bathroom and water) to Montezuma Road and then to Montezuma. Anyone not familiar with this route should let me know so we can match you up with another rider. Please do not gather in the middle road at the top of Montezuma Rd. When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road. For those who want do a little more ride proceed out to Keystone Ranch on return.

I will have picnic supplies so please bring a sandwich and your drink. Covid has seemed to stifle our after-bike-ride picnics and sharing of some of our favorite dishes. I always thought that was a fun part of the ride! Even though covid is still with us, I think most of us feel pretty comfortable being around each other in the outdoors. Please join us for lunch and bring something to share. This Monday is our annual meeting so I'm hopeful that everyone can attend and enjoy the meeting and lunch together.

Please wear name tags from any organization to the picnic if you have them. Also, we ask all riders to be back to the start by NOON so we can picnic and then have our annual meeting.

Thanks and ride safe,
Well I'm checking the weather and it appears to just be cloudy this morning and no thunderstorms until 1PM so the ride is a go. Not sure about the picnic at N. Pond. Probably somewhat iffy. We will see.

I'll see you at Heeney Rd at 9:30AM!!

Also, John Bowyer is looking for some help with leading these rides particularly after the end of this month. He is phasing out of this role and needs some folks to step up. It really doesn't take much time and effort so please consider it.
Thanks
We have a change of plans for tomorrow's bike ride. The Ute Pass/Ice Cream Ride has been cancelled due to covid. Instead, we will ride to Green Mountain Reservoir. Tomorrow's forecast does not look good so if it is raining at 9AM please consider the ride cancelled.

If not, the start of the ride is at the intersection of Rt. 9 and Heaney Rd. Approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30AM. Most of the parking is on Rt. 9 at the intersection of Heeney Road. Be careful crossing Rt. 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Rd is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. Please pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two.

Afterwards, we will have a picnic at N. Pond in Silverthorne. N. Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Rd. And Rt. 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and a sandwich (no grill). Be sure to wear name tags especially at the picnic. We do not rent the facility so hopefully it will not be in use.

One other thing, if you are not sure if you have paid or not just send an email to Chip Babbit (cdbabbitt@comcast.net).

We plan to reschedule the Ute Pass/Ice Cream ride later this year. If weather continues to look rainy I will send out another email later this evening. Hope to see everyone tomorrow.
The ride Monday August 15th is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points: North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:45AM (A group riders - faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30AM (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9). Some may remember that we did Ute Pass a couple weeks ago. We are doing it again - this time to get the ice cream!!

Please bring something to eat AND SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS as well as your drink. Bob is making the ice cream so we all need to do our part and bring a side dish.
Monday, August 8th we are meeting at N. Pond in Silverthorne, ready to ride at 9:30 and challenge the hills of Silverthorne. There may seem to be too many turns but most of them are easy to follow once you are riding the route. The Rec path does go by the outlets (watch for walkers) and the route does cross Route 9 twice so caution is advised. Please print this out and have for the ride. If lost ride downhill as the Rec path is along the Blue River.

Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail through Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards. If the chance of rain is high, I will put out an email Sunday evening. Big Horn Park is a nice setting for a Group potluck picnic and to socialize bring something to share as well as a sandwich and drink. There will be two starting points; North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:45 am (faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30 am (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9). I plan to leave from Silverthorne, so if I am not at the bottom of Ute Pass at that start go without me. Ute Pass Road is North of Silverthorne about 7 miles past North Pond. This a prelude to the world famous "Ice Cream Ride" which Bob Gilson and his wife, Jay have offered to host August 15. Be ready to ride at 10 am. This is a beautiful ride with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area. Please plan to be ready to ride. To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville. As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right. Take a right just past Safeway (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course. As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake. Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left. (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.) There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards. Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area. Please bring a pen to complete the envelope and some dollars to pay. If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area). To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the left just before the dam. To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes. We will be having a potluck lunch and riders are asked to bring something to share. Also bring your sandwich and a drink so you can socialize with your friends after the ride. Some may prefer one of the downtown restaurants. Bug spray may be needed as mosquitoes are sometimes around.

I normally ride counterclockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems. Since this is a circle those that want a shorter ride should plan to turn around. Remember this is on a road so stay to the right and watch out for potholes. The road often has a spot or two that could use some work, so do pay attention.

Since we have so many new people this year, I thought I should give everyone some of the basic info. If it is raining when the ride is to start, there will be no ride. I do look at several forecasts and will send out an email the night before, especially if we are going out of the county. Rides out of the county start at 10 am and in Summit County are at 9:30. All riders are required to use helmets (although this is not a state law it is a rule of the club). Earphones are not allowed due to safety concerns.

We expect the new section of recpath to open going up Freemont Pass on Wednesday at 4 pm.
