Annual Polar Bear Hike / Bike

Whoopee - we're planning to do a 23nd Annual New Year's Eve Polar Bear (mountain) Bike & Hike exercise/eating fest a tradition started by Bob Guthrie a long time ago. Pretty much the same as always - Les Clarke will act as the canary pre riding the route & leading the Mountain Bikers to Bob's memorial rock with the Hikers doing an out and back on the bike path towards Summit Cove and back.  Nancy Kaufman has agreed to keep the hikers under control and make sure no one gets lost.

This year's event will be on Friday, December 31, 2019. Meet at the Dillon Town Hall parking lot on Lake Dillon Drive at 10:00 a.m. Usually, the recpath is plowed from Dillon to Swan Mountain Road, but mountain bikes are a must, helmets are required (suggest ski helmet) and obviously, dress for winter.

After we've had enough exercise, we'll reconvene at Pug Ryans around 11:30am for food and adult beverages (separate checks, of course). No fee, no advance sign-up - we'll just get a rough head count (needed for lunch reservation) before we start biking & hiking, so just show up and have fun. Then home for a nap before New Year's Eve :-)
Although this event is associated with Summit Biking it is not an official one of our rides.  Just a good way to get together with friends as the year ends and get some exercise.  Participants assume any risk.
All participants must have vaccines and boosters are strongly urged.  We do not want to have an event and spread stuff.

Be there - tell your friends who may not be on this list.

Thanks!

Help Support Challenged Athletes

Hello Summit Bikers,

We normally do not forward request for fund raisers but this is a great opportunity to support an effort many of us love, skiing by supporting a biker.  I know Jon Kreamelmeyer and encourage all of you to participate in this find raising effort.

Ride Safe!

John Bowyer

In honor of our dear friend Jon Kreamelmeyer from Frisco Colorado, please join me in my efforts as I ride 640 miles in 7 days from San Francisco to San Diego in the Million Dollar Challenge, October 15 - 22, to raise $1,500,000+ to support the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF).

Jon was a very successful Summit School Nordic Coach, as well as the Coach of the US Paralympic Nordic Team for which he was recognized as an honoree and elected to the Paralympic Hall of Fame and has been on the board ever since. He is now facing his own journey as a challenged athlete.

The CAF helps people with physical challenges pursue an active lifestyle through physical fitness and athletics. CAF's mission is to give those with the desire to live active, competitive lifestyles every opportunity to compete in the sports they love. Meet Willie Stewart, an athlete Jon has coached. https://www.challengedathletes.org/athletes/willie-stewart/

If you watched any of the recent Paralympic Games from Tokyo you saw the CAF in-action, supporting many of these proud Olympians. In fact, if the CAF was a country, they would have achieved 6th place in the medal count!

https://www.challengedathletes.org/caf-paralympians-tokyo

In 2021 alone, 3,038 grants were distributed totaling $5,100,000 to support athletes ranging from Paralympic athletes to first-time applicants.

https://www.challengedathletes.org/2021-grant-distribution

CAF is a world leader that has helped over 26,000 individuals with physical challenges get access to sports since 1994.

Please join me in contributing to an impactful organization so people like Jon and the many he has coached can continue to live full lives. Every donation, small or large, makes a difference! Please click on the link below to go directly to my donation page. My goal is to raise $12,500.

October 4 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride, October 4, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir.  Pay attention as there are some pot holes and a rough spot or two.  Polly Koch will be heading up this ride.  This is the last schedule Monday ride of the season.

Riders that want to socialize afterwards can meet at North Pond in Silverthorne. Bring a sandwich and drink and socialize about the summer and your winter plans.  North Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Road and Route 9.  Be sure to wear name tags, especially at North Pond.

Stay safe until next year and keep riding.

Ride safe!

Fw: [Summit Biking] Ride September 27

Hello Summit Bikers,

Our former president and his wife (Norm and Renee) has asked us to bring a sandwich and something to drink over to his house after our ride tomorrow.  He lives near where we will be parking so you can ride your bike over.  His message follows.  See you tomorrow.

John Bowyer

John,
Renee and I would be more than happy to have the Monday group return to our house
following the Vail Pass ride. There is parking available on our street and in some neighbors driveways., or just bike over.
102A Riverside Place.  If  you like the idea, feel free to forward it to the group.

Ride September 27

Hello Summit Bikers,

The season is winding down but we still have a couple of rides.  Next Monday's ride will be to Vail Pass, starting at the West End of Frisco parking lot (near exit 201 off I70) at 11 am.  This is to avoid the construction area in Frisco. The leaves along Ten Mile Creek are near peak so this should be a scenic ride.  Riders are encouraged to bring a sandwich and drink to enjoy after the ride, while socializing.  Hope to see you there.

RE: September 20 Bike Ride-TIME CHANGE DUE TO COLD TEMPS

Please note that due to the chilly forecast in the morning, the rides from Georgetown are being changed to 11a for Guanella and noon for Loveland Ski Area.  While the precipitation forecast is much better than just a few days ago, (45% down to 1%), the temps are now going to be around 35 degrees at 9a but all the way up to 40 degrees by 11a! So dress accordingly and bring you A-Game!

Monday September 13 Ride

 Hi All Summit Biking Members:

Our next ride will be to Breckenridge and over Swan Mountain, starting at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot at 10 am on Monday, September 13.  The time change is due to the colder weather we start to experience in mid September.  The plan is to ride to Breckenridge (City Market) and return over Swan Mountain counter clockwise to the start.  People are encouraged to bring a sandwich and a drink to enjoy with their friends overlooking the lake.  Anyone wanting to bring something to share feel free.

Thanks,

Bike Ride September 1

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next Monday, September 1 we will venture outside Summit County to East Vail.  The ride will be from Big Horn Park, starting at 10 am.  For those who would like to car pool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am.  Carpools are recommended as parking is tight.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail trough Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards.  Big Horn Park is a nice setting for a sandwich and to socialize so feel free to bring something and stay.

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.

Remember the tourist are in town (West Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners.  Use hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.

August 23 Bike Ride & Annual Meeting

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week, August 23, we will have our annual meeting.  The ride we have prior to the meeting will be to Montezuma, meeting at the Amphitheater Parking lot at 9:30.  The plan is to ride to Montezuma and out to the Old Ranch restaurant in Keystone, returning to the Amphitheater by noon for our annual meeting. Feel free to bring a sandwich and drink and have lunch during the meeting.

New officers will need to be elected for those with whose terms are up.  If you are interested in helping your club out see me or Roberta Dakan of Polly Kock prior to the meeting.   In addition to the club officers, there is a need for a new person to start coordinating the rides.  I am willing to assist but it is time for new blood, not tired blood.  If you have any interest in helping let me know.

Hope to see you Monday.

August 16 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Some follow up concerning Monday's Ride:

Since most of us now have our new jerseys please wear them to the ride.

This ride will be followed by a picnic so please bring something to share.

A gas grill has been available, in the past, if you want to cook something.

I am riding from North Pond so am unsure of what time I will arrive at the bottom of Ute Pass.  If this is your starting point, just start, you will pass most of us either going up or down.

Watch out for gravel and other obstacles along route 9.  Hopefully with the reopening of I 70 through Glenwood Canyon traffic will be better.

Ride Safe!

Bike Ride & Ice Cream August 16

Hello Summit Bikers,

The ride August 16 is to Ute Pass.  This is a change from the web site.  There will be two starting points; North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:45 am (A group riders -- faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass road at 9:30 am (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9).  So some may remember that we did Ute Pass a couple weeks ago, when Bob had a cold and called off the event to keep an outbreak from happening.  Well we are doing it again, this time to get the ice cream.

The reward for the trip will be a picnic hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne. They will have a propane grill available for those who want to cook.  Bring something to eat and something to share with your friends as well as your drink.  As a special treat, Bob intends to make some ice cream which will go as far as it goes, since he never knows how many people will be there.  For some reason this tends to draw the biggest crowd of the season.

Below are the details from Bob:

I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 8/16. I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there. The picnic will be on our deck and in the house, so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch, since we don't really have a lawn, and the view is prettier from the deck anyway. We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. The deck rail is 2x8 flat, so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.

From the Silverthorne Elementary School, which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride 1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Road, then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail. We're the 4th house on the left and the address is: 0137 Crescent Moon Trail. For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.

We give extra points for those who ride up to the house, but if you're driving, we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac; plus you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past. About 6 can park in our driveway, but you'll have to back down to get out. If you're concerned, just carpool up from the elementary school. Or... this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play.

Bob's home phone is: 262-6123 if any questions or problems. His cell phone is: (405) 210-6222 if you're calling while we are on the ride.

Ride safe!

August 9 Ride And Smoke

Hello Summit Bikers,

I have looked at the air quality index for Monday and it appears we should be in the moderate range, which means little impact.  Conditions today are about better than yesterday and should continue to improve.  The ride is still on for 9:30 from the amphitheater parking lot.  If you are not comfortable with riding with some smoke in the air, do not come.

August 9 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

August 9, next Monday we are meeting at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking Lot ready to ride at 9:30 and challenge the hills of Silverthorne.  There may seem to be too many turns but most of them are easy to follow once you riding the route. The recpath does go by the outlets (watch for walkers) and the route does cross Route 9 twice so caution is advised. Please print this out and have for the ride. If lost ride downhill as the recpath is along the Blue River.

Thanks to Bill and Jeanne Tracy for leading this ride.  May the riders give you the same respect they have me over the years.

Note this is a change from the calendar.  Next weeks ride August 16 will be the Ice Cream Ride, hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson. The annual meeting will be August 23.

Hello Summit Bikers,

One of the worse things I have to do is guess when it is going to rain in the mountains.   As you all know we have had a wet week.  Looking at the forecast for  East Vail it now appears to be better than a 50 percent chance of rain by eleven tomorrow, so instead of getting wet I am changing the route to meet at Dillion Amphitheater parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 am August 2 (tomorrow).  The planned ride will be clockwise around the lake with optional add on to Copper, if the rain holds off. Hopefully, we will be able to put a Vail Pass from East Vail in the schedule again this year.  The ride tomorrow will be led by Bill and Jeanne Tracy.  Bring a rain jacket, just in case.  Plan to stay and socialize after the ride with your lunch.

July 12 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week's ride, July 12, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville.  This is a beautiful ride with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.  We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area.  Please plan to be ready to ride.  To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville.  As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right.  Take a right just past Safeway (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course.  As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake.  Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left.  (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.)  There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards.  Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area.  Please bring a pen to complete the envelope and some dollars to pay.  If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area).  To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the left just before the dam.  To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes.  We will not be having a pot luck lunch, but bring a sandwich and socialize with your friends after the ride.  Some may prefer one of the downtown restaurants.  Bug spray may be needed as mosquitoes are sometimes around.

I normally ride counter clockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems.  Since this is a circle those that want a shorter ride should plan to turn around.  Remember this is on a road so stay to the right and watch out for pot holes.  The road often has a spot or two that could use some work so do pay attention.

Since we have so many new people this year I thought I should give everyone some of the basic info.  If it is raining when the ride is to start there will be no ride.  I do look at several forecasts and will send out an email the night before, especially if we are going out of the county.  Rides out of the county start at 10 am and in Summit County are at 9:30.  All riders are required to use helmets (although this is not a state law it is a rule of the club).  Ear phones are not allowed due to safety concerns.

Most of all ride safe and have fun!

NO RIDE JULY 5

Hello Summit Bikers,

Just a reminder we will not have a bike ride July 5.  Normally the County is very busy the days around Memorial Day, Forth of July and Labor Day.  The bike paths can be very crowded during this time and if any of ride I suggest going early and using lots of caution.

I will be putting out an email regarding our July 12 ride but it will Turquoise Lake near Leadville.  A ways to drive but the ride is beautiful.

Bike Ride June 28

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride, June 28 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin or Loveland Pass.  We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 am.  I suggest avoiding the rec path through Keystone as more tourist may make it busy.  The suggested way is to turn right on Elk Drive going through the fence to Keystone Ranch Road and going left through the River Run Area of Keystone (groups often gather back up in River Run, since this is convenient for bathroom and water) to Montezuma Road and to Montezuma.  Anyone not familiar with this route should let the me know so we can match you up with another rider.  Please do not gather on the road at the end of Montezuma Road.  When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road.  For those who want to do a little more ride out to Keystone Ranch on return (I was informed although it has been chipped sealed it is not bad, although I urge caution).   I will have the picnic supplies so bring a sandwich, something to share and your drink.  Hope the weather is as good as it was today.  Please wear name tags.

As a reminder this Wednesday is Ride To Work or Wherever Day in Summit.  A number of locations in Summit County will have breakfast items and most will have bike techs available.  Locations will be open between 7:30 and 10:30.  Locations include Frisco Historical Park and upper County Commons; Dillon at intersection of Amphitheatre and Recpath; Silverthorne Pavilion Patio; Breckenridge Blue River Plaza; Summit Cove Intersection of Swan Mt Road and Six.

There will be no ride the following week, as it is July 4 weekend and the County normally is very crowded.  Be very careful if you do plan to ride over the Fourth.

Ride Safe and Enjoy!

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week, June 21 we are doing Tour De Soda.  Plan to meet at North Pond (Silverthorne on right side of Route 9, near the elementary school) at 9:30 am, ready to ride.

The route takes us to the River Run Area of Keystone, out to the Old Ranch House, through Soda Creek and back to our cars.  Please print out the directions below and have them with you.   There are a number of turns but once you ride through it is not that complicated.  Some changes are in this years ride so all should have.  I realize this is not as easy as most of our rides to follow but does take you to some new places.

There are lots of new members this year and I ask each of you to make a special effort to make them fell welcome.  Wear name tags so people get to know each other better.  The fit kits will be available at this ride.  Shirts are selling nicely so do not be left out when we all ride with them.

Anyone interested in taking a few rides please let me know at bikebreck@yahoo.com.  I have directions an information about all our rides but after many years of doing this could use assistance.
