Annual Meeting Change and August 1 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

There are several changes to the published rides over the next few weeks.  The annual meeting will be held August 22.  In order to leave time for the meeting the ride that day will be to Montezuma.  Several other rides have been changed and they can be found on the web site or just wait and be surprised when the weekly email comes out.

Next Monday, August 1 we will once again venture outside Summit County to East Vail.  The ride will be from Big Horn Park, starting at 10 am.  For those who would like to carpool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am.  Carpools are recommended as parking is tight.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail through Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards.  If the chance of rain is high, I will put out an email Sunday evening.  Big Horn Park is a nice setting for a Group potluck picnic and to socialize bring something to share as well as a sandwich and drink.  This route has a lot of construction going on; however, the bike path is still open.  Riders will have to pay attention and use caution, especially on the way down

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.

Remember the tourist are in town (Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners.  Use hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.

Ride safe and have fun!

Bike Ride July 25

Hello Summit Bikers,

The ride July 25 is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points; North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:45 am (faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30 am (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9).  I plan to leave from Silverthorne, so if I am not at the bottom of Ute Pass at that start go without me.  Ute Pass Road is North of Silverthorne about 7 miles past North Pond.  This a prelude to the world famous "Ice Cream Ride" which Bob Gilson and his wife, Jay have offered to host August 15.  Mark your calendars!

Following the ride, we will have a potluck lunch at North Pond.  Please bring something to share with your fellow riders, as well as a sandwich and drink for yourself.  I will have paper plates, plastic forks and napkins.

Hope to see you there.

Ride Safe,

John Bowyer

New Biking Group

New cycling group for friends in Summit and beyond

Sy Katz and Curtis Weller are starting a new bike list in google groups (Cycling Friends) for those interested in cycling on days other than the already existing groups that post for Monday and Friday. We do not want to be in conflict with their schedule.

This is a meet-up format and not sponsored by the Summit Biking Group.  Anyone added to the group will have the ability to post a ride and add others as you like to the list.  Multiple rides can be posted of various distance and elevation.

Ride start location can be anywhere in the area, any day, and any start time.  Our intent is to create an email list to be used as a method to communicate rides.  There is no obligation to be a ride leader per se, just to put it out there as an opportunity to ride with others.

When you receive an email announcing a ride, if you intend to join the ride, please use the "reply to author" button at the bottom of the email to reply to the person who posted the ride.

If interested in being added to the Cycling Friends google group, please send an email to Curtis Weller at cweller88@gmail.com and he will add you to the list.

Thank you and ride safe.

Bike Ride July 11

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week's ride, July 11, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville.  Be ready to ride at 10 am. This is a beautiful ride with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.  We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area.  Please plan to be ready to ride.  To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville.  As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right.  Take a right just past Safeway (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course.  As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake.  Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left.  (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.)  There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards.  Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area.  Please bring a pen to complete the envelope and some dollars to pay.  If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area).  To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the left just before the dam.  To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes.  We will be having a potluck lunch and riders are asked to bring something to share.  Also bring your sandwich and a drink so you can socialize with your friends after the ride.  Some may prefer one of the downtown restaurants.  Bug spray may be needed as mosquitoes are sometimes around.

I normally ride counterclockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems.  Since this is a circle those that want a shorter ride should plan to turn around.  Remember this is on a road so stay to the right and watch out for potholes.  The road often has a spot or two that could use some work, so do pay attention.

Since we have so many new people this year, I thought I should give everyone some of the basic info.  If it is raining when the ride is to start, there will be no ride.  I do look at several forecasts and will send out an email the night before, especially if we are going out of the county.  Rides out of the county start at 10 am and in Summit County are at 9:30. All riders are required to use helmets (although this is not a state law it is a rule of the club).  Earphones are not allowed due to safety concerns.

We expect the new section of recpath to open going up Freemont Pass on Wednesday at 4 pm.  We will meet at the ribbon cutting at 4 and ride the new section.  Those that want to continue up the pass are free to do so.  For those that do ride on, the road down is steep as often has gravel on the edge, watch your speed coming down.

Most of all ride safe and have fun!

John Bowyer
