Idaho Springs Ride May 31 CANCELED

Hello Summit Bikers,

Those of you that have been following the weather forecast should not be surprised that the ride from Idaho Springs for this Monday, May 31 is canceled, due to expected rain and cool conditions.   The odds of rain in Summit are lower but still close to 50 percent and it will be cool, around 50.   Mother Nature does not seem to like early season rides.  Hopefully, we will be able to do next weeks ride with better conditions.

Bike Ride May 31

Our next ride, May 31 will be between Idaho Springs and Georgetown and back.  Be prepared to ride at 10 am.  This ride is an out and back but there are some turns so new people should ride with someone. Identify yourself to me the day of the ride and we will take care of you. I have found a new parking area and confirmed with the visitor center we are good to park there.  There are two lots, with the further one saying employee only -- do not park there.  To get to the parking take exit 240 to the South (right) and turn into the former visitor center (almost an immediate right).  There are no bathrooms at this location.   The bike path starts between the parking lot and I 70 so we no longer need to ride through town.  Parking is still tight so riders are encouraged to car pool.

We will not have a picnic as there are no facilities.  A number of the participants plan to stop at Cabin Creek Brewery in Georgetown.  This is the new brewery you will pass on the left just before you reach Georgetown.  The fastest way to get there is to take I 70 to the Georgetown exit, go past the visitor center and take the second exit off the round about (headed toward Idaho Springs).  The brewery is on your right next to the first lake you come to.

Riders are encouraged to use hand signals so others are aware of turns, stops and road obstacles.  Riders are encouraged to wear name tags since there are many new people.  Any name tag will do as long as it shows your name.

I am still not allowed to ride but expect to be back soon, so will not be there.  Currently there is a high probability of raining weather in Idaho Springs on Monday.  If the odds of rain are still high on Sunday this ride will have to be canceled.  Please check emails on Sunday evening.

Ride safe and have fun!

Bike Ride May 24

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride, May 24, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir.  Pay attention as there are some pot holes and a rough spot or two.

Afterwards, we will have a picnic at North Pond in Silverthorne. North Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Road and Route 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and a sandwich (as we will not have a grill) . Be sure to wear name tags, especially at the picnic.  The picnic is open to all vaccinated riders.  We trust that riders will conform to this rule.  First picnic in two years!!

Our new jerseys will be available at the picnic to try on.  Instructions on how to order will be given.  In case you miss this ride the jerseys will be around for a few weeks so there will be more opportunities.
This is a fun ride to bring a guest along since it is an out and back and difficult to get lost on.  Our leader for this ride will be Don Hansen as I am out until mid June.  I am working on staying in shape and will start riding as soon as the doctors say.

Ride Safe!

Bear Creek Ride, May 17 Canceled

Hello Summit Bikers,

As everyone knows I hate to cancel a bike ride but the chances of rain in the Morrison area is very high tomorrow, early in the day.  So instead of getting everyone soaking wet we will not do a ride this week.  Let's hope this is not a trend, but extra water is always good.  Next weeks ride will be Green Mountain Reservoir where our new shorts will be displayed for the first time.  I will put out information on that ride soon.

Bear Creek Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

If you have not done so all ready get those bikes checked out and ready to ride.  I realize the weather the next few days in Summit may not be the best for outdoor activities but now is the time to get set for summer.  The first ride of the season, May 17, will be in Morrison, along Bear Creek.

Starting west of the 470 loop near Bear Creek Lake Park at the Morrison exit. There will be no picnic this week. Those wanting to stay for lunch can go to lunch at the Red Rocks Grill in Morrison. They are located at 415 Bear Creek Avenue.

Directions to Ride

To get to the start of the ride go east on 70 toward Denver and get off on 470 south. Take 470 to the Morrison exit and turn right (West). The parking lot is on the right at the corner of S. Rooney Road and Morrison Road (across from a Philips 66 gas station). If you are late, the bike path is across Morrison Road from the parking area, then ride east under 470. The drive from exit 205 (Silverthorne) to the start is approximately 1 hour. Plan to be ready to ride by 10 am. If it appears likely that it will rain during the ride I will send an email out the afternoon before, canceling.  Currently the prognosis is a slight chance.

Your ride coordinator had a bike accident in Arizona and is still recovering.  Terese has offered to take charge of the group this week.

This season`s rides are on the website SummitBiking.org.  There is a lot of other useful information on the site such as safety tips and where Summit Bikers can get discounts at local bike shops. Members without a life time membership  are strongly encouraged to visit the website  and join for the 2021 bike season.   This will save us administrative time before our ride, May 17.  Even I have to pay up!  This is also a great time to tell others about our rides, since most Summit Country people are very active.

One more item,  we will have a new Summit Biking Jersey this year.  A fit kit will be available at our Green Mountain ride, May 24.  Charlie Shofnos coordinated the effort with the board to come up with this modern design.

Looking forward to another great season of rides, with a wonderful group!
