Bike Season 2012

With the great weather we have been having hopefully everyone has started riding.  But if you have not, now is the time to take the bikes down, clean, oil, check brakes and make sure things are ready for another great season of riding.  This seasons rides have been posted at our web site www.summitbiking.org with the first one being Bear Creek in Littleton , May 14.  While at the web site be sure to check out the information posted, such as the youth program and safety guidelines.  In addition, under the resources tab there are some discounts for items purchased at local bike shops.  Now is a great time to renew those memberships as well.

 

This year there are some major projects going on around the county, such as work on Fremont Pass (widening the shoulder near Copper) and Vail Pass resurfacing.  (Anyone riding Vail Pass should be cautious as there are wider gaps this year that a tire could get caught in.)  We have taken the timing of these projects into consideration in building the schedule but as always things change so emails will be posted weekly.  New rides this year will be a ride up Beaver Creek and a ride to top of Hoosier Pass to watch the pro-cyclist ride over as they leave Breckenridge.  

 

All members are encouraged to let others know about our Monday social rides.  In addition, we once again are sponsoring the youth program (12 to 18 year olds) and encourage everyone to let neighbors know.  Providing leadership is Peder Hansen, a fifth grade teacher here in Summit County .  He can be reached at summitroadies@gmail.com or 970-470-5176.  Keeping with the spirit Bob Guthrie showed, bikers of all levels are welcome at all rides.  This applies to our youth program as well as our Monday rides.

 

We are working on offering rides other than Mondays this season.  If you would like to join with others to help plan these please get back to me at bikebreck@yahoo.com.   Additions will be posted at our website.

 

It will be great to see everyone again for the summer starting in a couple of weeks.

2012 USAPCC Comes Back to Breck

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be coming back to Breckenridge in 2012! Breck has been selected as the start town for Stage 5. An excerpt of the announcement is below. A start is generally more low key than a stage finish, but it generally provides fans much greater access to the riders. Regardless, we still will need lots of volunteers to help uphold the reputation Summit County established in 2011. 

Breckenridge, COLO. – With nearly 40 cities across the state expressing initial interest in the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge, race officials have selected Breckenridge as one of the 12 host cities that will serve as starts and finishes for the second annual stage race. After drawing more than 1 million spectators in its inaugural year, the 2012 race will return to Colorado from August 20-26, 2012, and will visit Breckenridge as the start of Stage 5 on August 24, 2012.

 

The host cities and stages of the 2012 USA Pro Challenge include:

 

·          Monday, Aug. 20         Stage 1            Durango – Telluride 

·          Tuesday, Aug. 21         Stage 2           Montrose – Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte

·          Wednesday, Aug. 22    Stage 3           Gunnison – Aspen

·          Thursday, Aug. 23       Stage 4           Aspen – Beaver Creek/Vail Valley

·          Friday, Aug. 24            Stage 5           Breckenridge – Colorado Springs

·          Saturday, Aug. 25        Stage 6           Golden – Boulder

·          Sunday, Aug. 26          Stage 7/TT     Denver

 

"The host cities selected for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge will enable us to showcase the beauty and hospitality of Colorado to a worldwide audience," said Shawn Hunter, CEO of the USA Pro Challenge. "These cities are valued partners who will work with us, hand in hand, as we continue to raise the bar for professional cycling here in America."

 

"We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in 2012," said Breckenridge Mayor John Warner.  "Breckenridge played a prominent role in the inaugural 2011 race and the excitement and energy generated by the event is something we want to continue to build upon."

 

Further details of the start and finish line locations, as well as the specific, detailed route will be announced in the spring.

Ride October 3

It looks like the wonderful fall weather is going to stick around a while.  Therefore, I think we should get together for another ride.  Lets meet at the Frisco marina this Monday at 10 am for a ride either up Vail Pass or around the lake.  As our numbers are much less this time of year the simplest thing is for people to bring their own lunch and we will have it on the deck at Frisco and reminisce about our great summer season. This looks like it will be the last ride of the season.  Hope to see you there. 

Monday Sept 26 Ride

Since it's near the end of the season and many folks are out of town, the Monday Ride for September 26th will be an informal "Show & Go" ride starting from the Dillon Amphitheater at 10am along any of our normal routes starting from Dillon. However, there will be no formal start or announcements. Just show up, group up and go have a great ride! The current weather forecast looks good, so please come if you would like to take advantage of the unusually nice late season weather.

Sept 19 Ride - Georgetown to Idaho Springs or Loveland

We are going to Georgetown for Monday, September 19, meeting at 10 am.  The meeting spot is off exit 228 at Georgetown, a left turn at the stop sign beside the gasoline station and then 0.8 miles to the parking lot just before the restrooms overlooking the lake.

There will be two rides.  One, from Georgetown to Idaho Springs and back, a reversal of our usual ride.  The second will be from Georgetown to Bakerville to Loveland to the Pass (for those who desire) and return.

Lunch will be at the lake; no grill, bring something to share, and a chair.  The forecast at this time is sunny and perfect. BUT, if the ride is to be cancelled, a notice will be sent out by 9 am.

Tour de Silverthorn Ride September 12

 Monday's ride will meet at Silverthorne's North Pond on Hamilton Creek Road across from Silverthorne Elementary School at 10 am ready to ride.  There will be several Tour de Silverthorne Routes available with leaders who will take us up and down the hills surrounding Silverthorne or off to the Dillon Reservoir.

Lunch will be at noon at the home of Fran and Barry Lazarus, 293 Hillside Drive.  A grill will be available.  Please bring folding chairs, something delicious to share, and a beverage.

Directions to Fran and Barry's home:

Leave the North Pond on Hamilton Creek Road, cross the Blue River on the bridge.  Hillside is the second street after the bridge.  Left turn onto Hillside Drive.  They are the 5^th house on the left.

Idaho Springs Ride August 29 Canceled

Reluctantly we need to cancel today's ride.  The rain is moving in faster than anticipated.  There will be no ride next week on Labor Day but there will be a ride September 12.

Idaho Springs Ride August 29

Pro Ride VailSprint

This Thursday is the sprint from Vail to the top of Old Route 6(where the bike path meets the road as you ride down towards Vail from Vail Pass).  The first riders leave Vail for what is expected to be a 25 minute sprint at 1 pm.  For those wanting to ride up to see this event I plan to leave from the West Frisco Parking area at 11am.  This should get us to the finish line prior to the first sprinters finishing.  I have been told that this is too late to start and that we should be at the finish by 8 am, so make up your own mind.  Bring water, a rain jacket, something to eat and a bike lock.  The last riders should finish around 3:30 pm.

 

For those wanting to see the finish Saturday in Breckenridge a jumbotron will be set up in Blue River Plaza (where the visitor center is located on Main Street).  This location will allow visitors to see the event on the big screen as well as be near the finish.  Traffic may be a major problem so I would recommend being in Breckenridge no later than 1 pm.

Summit Biking Members, On behalf of the Board of Summit Biking, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the individuals who made the 4th Annual Bob Guthrie Memorial/Circle the Summit Ride possible. This year's event was the best yet with just over 600 riders, great routes, fantastic weather, food, aid stations and ambiance.   In particular I would like to thank Bob Chebul and Erin Kneedler, this years co-chairs as well as the various committee chairs; Monique Mustard and Deb Nelson (publicity), Arnie & Shelly Henden (registration), Norman & June Prince (food & beverage), Anne Hamilton & Jan Dudley (Aid Stations), Dennis Kaiser and Jim Roberts (signage), Bob Giordano (facilities), Mike & Pat Dahly (course marshals) and Dan Schweitzer (web site). Thanks to to all of you who volunteered for various jobs necessary to making the ride a sauces.   Next years ride will be co-chaired by Erin Kneedler and Norm Stoller. This will mark the 5th year that Erin has Chaired the ride!  As many of you may not know, Erin is the originator of this ride, bringing the idea to Bob Guthrie and myself only a couple months before Bob G died.  Many thanks to Erin and Avalanche Physical Therapy.
