Hoosier Pass Bike Path Feasibility

Community workshops to discuss possible routing alternatives for a bike path from Breckenridge over Hoosier Pass to Alma are scheduled the 1st week of December in both Breckenridge and Alma as follows:

Breckenridge: Monday, December 3rd 6:30p - 7:45p at Stephen C. West Ice Arena, 189 Boreas Pass Road

Alma: Tuesday, December 4th - 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. Alma Town Hall, 59 E. Buckskin

Everyone is welcome to attend and provide comments.

October 8 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

 

This week, October 8 we will meet at the Frisco Marina for a show and go ride.  Due to the very cold mornings I suggest meeting at 11 am.  Show and go means that participants meet and select the ride they want to do and go.  A suggestion is to ride over the dam and down the rec-path through Silverthorne to the elementary school.  At that point the group can go towards Hamilton Creek and those that want can to climb can continue to ride up, while others may want to retrace their route back to Frisco.  Due to the small numbers this time of year we will not have a picnic. 

 

As I will be leaving for a fall vacation October 13 this is the last email of the season.  For those that want to ride on Mondays, if the weather is nice, meet at the Frisco Marina at 11 am and continue to do the show and go rides until things get to rough.

September 30 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

 

As most of you realized the weather was not great last week and although a few did show up and ride. We are going to try the ride again next Monday.  We will meet at the Dillon Amplitheatre for a ride around the lake with an extension to Copper for the faster group.  Plan to meet ready to ride at 10 am. This will allow it to warm up a little. We will have picnic afterward (around 12 to 12:15) with a grill so plan to bring something to cook as well as to share with others.

September 24 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

 

We had a great crowd last week,including 5 new people.  This week we will meet at the Dillon Amplitheatre for a ride around the lake with an extension to Copper for the faster group.  Plan to meet ready to ride at 10 am.  This will allow it to warm up a little.  We will have picnic afterward (around 12 to 12:15) with a grill so plan to bring something to cook as well as to share with others. 

 

This is the last ride on the schedule for the year, however others may be held if the weather holds.  A survey is planned shortly to get feedback from the group on changes we made this year so please respond when requested.

September 18 Ride

Hope to see you on a much dryer Tuesday morning for a ride around Green Mountain Reservoir.  The start time is 10 am at the corner of Route 9 and Heeny Road. Those that want to ride from Bob Giordano's house can meet at 9 am there. The picnic will also be at Bob's.  See previous email for directions.  Park on the right side of the street only above Bob's house.

Monday Ride Changed to Tuesday September 18

Several people have said it would be better to move this weeks ride to Tuesday, September 18, therefor that is what we are going to do.  All the details stay the same.

 

Next weeks ride will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 10:00 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. Bob Giordano will be riding from his house at 9 am and others are invited to park there if they want the extra distance. I plan to be riding and be at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road.

There will be a picnic at Bob's house (175 Game Creek Trail) after the ride. He will have a grill available so plan to bring something for lunch, to share with your friends as well as something to drink. To get to Bob's house, coming back from Green Mountain Reservoir, turn right on Ranch Road and left on Game Trail. His number if you need it is 468-2515.

Summit Biking Septemebr 17 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Next weeks ride will be from Idaho Springs to Georgetown and back. Some riders may want to go on to either Silver Plume or Loveland Ski Area and return. We will meet at the Courtney Riley Cooper Park in Idaho Spring at 10 a.m. ready to ride. To get to the park take exit 240 from I 70, turn left on 13 Ave (towards town). At Colorado Boulevard go right. The park is on the left next to the creek. The drive takes about 45 minutes. We will have a grill so bring something to cook and something to share with your friends. As always bring what you would like to drink.

 

As I am still on the road to recovery Bob Giordano has agreed to lead this ride.

Monday Ride

No official Monday ride for Summit Biking, and no picnic. We are having a bit of a warmup, so the 9AM start for the ride I will be doing is good.  This ride will be from Dillon Amphitheatre Parking Lot, up Montezuma, then back over Swan mountain and back around the lake to the parking lot.  

My pace will be roughly a B-pace, 14 to 16mph. Slower riders are welcome, but you will need to form your own group at the start.  Slower riders may also want to only go to Montezuma and back.  

This is my last ride of the Summit County Summer.  It has been wonderful.  Thanks to all of you for your support.  See you in the skiing season.

UPDATE UPDATE Friday, US Pro Cycling

I just talked to the Blue River Town Clerk.  We are confirmed to have the use of the parking lot.  However, she learned at a Tuesday meeting, that the Route 9 south will be closed at 8:30, not 10AM.  We will have to be at the lot before 8:30, and can plan our ride up to Hoosier then.  

So, see you at 8:30AM for the ride to the pass.

The activities and issues can not be totally predictable.  I saw a couple stages last year.  The Swan Mountain scene was chaotic to say the least.  Hoosier Pass may have similar issues.  With the 10:50 race start, expect the  peloton to be nearly intact at the Pass and will go through quickly.  Our best viewing sight may be before the peak of the pass, better view of the switchbacks. 

CDOT is reported Route 9 closure being at 10AM.  I suspect we, on bikes will be allowed on a bit longer, but we should not count on it.  As soon as the ride cars start going through, we will not want to be riding, believe me.  So, I suggest we be in our viewing place by 10AM.  The ride time for most of us from the Blue River Town Hall will be 30 to 45 minutes. Let's leave the Blue River Town Hall at 9AM.  If you plan to take one of the 15 parking spaces, be there in time to ride by 9AM.  Have a backup plan, if the lot is full.  Riding to the Blue River Town Hall is about 45 minutes for an A Rider, longer for others.  

Bring a backpack with:  Beverages, Food, Bike locks, suntan lotion, clothing for variable weather, shoes.  Anything else?  Extra battery for cell phone?  Don't forget medical identification.  

I will be leaving Silverthorne by 7:15AM, and have room for one more cyclist.  We can meet at the Transit Center's parking lot at 7:15. Call or email to car pool with me.  Then I will drive to Blue River Town Hall.  If/when the lot is full, I will send out an email alert.  Smart phones will be handy. Also, there is a smartphone AP that will let you view a live video of the activities in Breck and towards us at the Pass.
