Monday afternoon ride starting from the dam

The weather is going to be perfect up here in the county Monday afternoon.  If you are interested in a road bike ride, met me at the East end of the dam at 12:30 and we’ll put in some miles.

Road Ride Around The Lake Today

Is anybody interested in riding around the lake this afternoon.  If so meet me at the East end of the dam at 12:30.  This is the Dillon end where the path comes up from Silverthorne.  We may go around the lake or divert up to Keystone, Montezuma or extend over to Breckenridge.  In any case it will be sunny, cool and downhill both ways.

2015 US Pro Challenge to Showcase Summit County

Summit County has hit a home run with the US Pro Challenge in 2015! 

Four of the seven stages will start, finish or spend the day in the County as follows:

Tuesday - Stage 2 Finish at Arapahoe Basin coming from Steamboat Springs

Wednesday - Stage 3 Start at Copper Mountain going to Aspen

Thursday - Stage 4 Finish in Breckenridge coming from Aspen

Friday - Stage 5 Individual Time Trial in Breckenridge

This will be a fantastic opportunity to promote biking and other summer activities in Summit County. Details of the specific routes will be released in January.

September 22nd ride

Hi All,

The last scheduled Monday ride for this season is on September 22rd. Let' meet at the Dillon Amphitheater lot at 9:30. We can make a group decision as to where we would like to ride. As of this moment the temperature ought to be 54F at ride time with a 22% chance of precipitation. The likelihood of rain increases later in the morning. How about we break with tradition and gather for lunch at the Jersey Boys Restaurant in Dillon after the ride. If there are too many of us we can chose some other place that can accommodate a larger group.

August 25 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

For those that did not go to Georgetown they found a way to make the ride up Guanella Pass tougher by chip sealing the road. 

Next weeks ride is to Montezuma or Loveland Pass.  Since we are unable to ride all the way to Montezuma the plan is to ride up as far as we can and then ride to the Old Ranch House in Keystone and return.  Those riding to either A-Basin or Loveland Pass please use caution as all hazmat trucks use Loveland Pass as well as many visitors. 

Meet at the Dillon Amphitheater at 9:30 am ready to ride.  We will have a grill so bring something to cook and share with your friends.  As always bring your own drink.  We should have the grill started around 11:30 with most of us back between then and noon.

Remember to use hand signals and ride safe.

August 18 Ride

Next weeks ride has several options, including Guanella Pass, Loveland Ski Area or Idaho Springs.  Be ready to ride at 10 am from next to the Georgetown Visitor Center along Argentine Road (take exit 228 off I 70).  Parking is available along Argentine Road and the visitor center asked us not to take up all their parking.  Since there are no grills bring a sandwich and a drink for after the ride during our social hour following the ride as well as a dish to share with your friends (a bag of potato chips does not count as a dish).  The picnic will start around 12:15, although the Guanella Pass riders may need more time.

August 11 Bike Ride and Yearly Meeting

Hello Summit Bikers,

It was fortunate we rode this morning so we missed the down pour.

Next week we will meet at 9:30 ready to ride, at the amphitheater in Dillon.  The ride will be either down the trail all the way through Keystone to the River Run area or on route 6, if you prefer. Once in River Run return on the road which goes through the Mountain House area and pass the stables.  Continue on to the Old Ranch House in Keystone.  The road to the ranch house is the one that goes straight where most of us walk our bikes through the fence (River Golf Course).  The road has some rolling hills and turns left just before you get to the Ranch Restaurant.  If you get to the restaurant you missed the turn by 100 yards.  When you get to a gate and dirt road, return to the amphitheater for a picnic and the yearly meeting.  We will have a grill available so plan to bring what you would like to grill, a dish to share and your drink.  The picnic starts around 11:30 with the yearly meeting following around noon.  Both will be held at the pavilion (where we normally have the picnic).

Use caution if you ride the path through Keystone as many tourist are still around, however riding along the Snake River is beautiful.  Space between riders along with verbal communication and hand signals reduces the risk of accidents.

THE PRO CHALLENGE NEEDS YOU TO VOLUNTEER!

The 2014 USA Pro Cycling Challenge is looking for volunteers!

The race is just 3 short weeks away, and we still need to find about 150 people to help with the event.  The Breckenridge Stage is a FINISH on Friday, August 22, and guess what?  There's no school that day in Sum Co!  The riders will arrive in Breck at the end of stage #5 which starts in Woodland Park, CO.  They will travel over Hoosier Pass, do a lap around town, up and over Moonstone, and back down Main Street for a really fast and exciting, downhill finish in front of a massive crowd.  How exciting!  We need help all over the course, from the top of Hoosier to the Finish Line, with many stations inbetween.

If you live here, there is a community information meeting on Thursday, Aug. 7^th at 5:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Breckenridge Town Hall at 150 Ski Hill Road.  Race and community impact information, including all road closures, will be presented, along with a Q and A session.  This is not a required meeting but a great overview of the event for volunteers.

August 4 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

 

Judging by the feedback, it sounds like we can add a new route through Silverthorne.  With almost 2,000 feet of gain it will not be an early season ride.

Next week we will once again venture outside Summit County to East Vail and either do Vail Pass or Vail Trail.  The ride will be from Big horn Park in East Vail, starting at 10 am.  There will be a grill available (sorry about the lack of a grill last week) so plan to bring something to cook, a drink and a dish to share with your friends. For those who would like to car pool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Vail Trail trough Vail and on to Minturn.  The picnic will start around noon.

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.

Remember the tourist are in town (West Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners.  Use those hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.

Our Circle the Summit Ride is coming up August 16 and riders are encouraged to participate and get the word out to others.

July 28 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Since I have had several questions regarding next weeks ride I am putting out a short clarification.  The ride goes from and returns to the amphitheater parking lot (starting at 9:30 am.)  The main ride has a lot of climbing but most riders should be able to complete in 2 to 2.5 hours.  For those that do not want to do all the climbing I suggest riding to the end of the Silverthorne Recpath near North Pond, reversing the path back to the dam and riding to Frisco and returning for the picnic around 11:45 am.  Hope to see you Monday.
