Cycle Event Month in Silverthorne Kick Off June 1

Hello Summit Bikers,

On June 1 Silverthrone kicks off cycle month with a First Friday Event at the Pavilion. This event features the Shaky Hand String Band and will have bike mechanics making adjustments as well as bike fittings. Bring your bike between 4 and 7 pm and get it checked out for our new season. Twenty-five bikes will be built and provided to kids in need. In addition, there will be an adult race on adult size big wheel bikes. If you would like to participate in the Big Wheel Race and or help out with building bikes please write me back at bikebreck@yahoo.com. Summit Biking's board members will be manning a tent to provide information about our club to prospective members. The board members will also assist in building the bikes and compete in the Big Wheel Races. In order to draw attention to Summit Biking all members are requested to wear their current or classic Summit Bike Jersey. There will also be refreshments (beer and food) for sell. Hope to see many of you participate at this function.

June 4 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride, June 4, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. Pay attention as there are some pot holes and a rough spot or two.

Afterwords, we will have a picnic at North Pond in Silverthorne. North Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Road and Route 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and something to grill as we will have a grill. Be sure to wear name tags, especially at the picnic.

This is a fun ride to bring a guest along since it is an out and back and difficult to get lost on.

May 28 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

We had a great turn out for the start of our bike season.

Next weeks ride May 28 will be between Idaho Springs and Georgetown and back. They are still working in Idaho Springs so we will be unable to ride from the park. Instead plan to meet in the large parking lot between Beau Jo's Pizza and I 70 at 10 am, ready to ride. To get to the park take exit 240 from I 70, and turn left. Turn right on Idaho Street and right again on Water Street which goes into the parking lot. The drive takes about 45 minutes. Unfortunately we will not have a picnic since we are unable to get to the park. In the past we have often found town too busy to eat lunch but a few of us may try to get into Beau Jo's after the ride if it is not too crowded.

Riders are encouraged to use hand signals so others are aware of turns, stops and road obstacles. Riders are encouraged to wear name tags since there are many new people. Any name tag will do as long as it shows your name.

Bike Ride May 21

It is time to take the bikes out, oil things make sure all is working as well as find those bike clothes. This season`s first ride will be held Monday May 21 starting west of the 470 loop near Bear Creek Lake Park at the Morrison exit. There will be no picnic this week. Those wanting to stay for lunch can join me at the Red Rocks Grill in Morrison. They are located at 415 Bear Creek Avenue. I will have a table for 12 reserved for 1 pm in the name of Summit Bikers.

Directions to Ride

To get to the start of the ride go east on 70 toward Denver and get off on 470 south. Take 470 to the Morrison exit and turn right. The parking lot is on the right at the corner of S. Rooney Road and Morrison Road. If you are late, the bike path is across Morrison Road from the parking area, then ride east under 470. The drive from exit 205 (Silverthorne) to the start is approximately 1 hour. Plan to be ready to ride by 10 am. If it appears likely that it will rain during the ride I will send an email out the afternoon before, canceling.

Members without a life time membership should use the website and join for the 2018 bike season. This is also a great time to tell others about our rides, since most Summit Country people are very active.

Thursday Morning Ride for a couple of hours

If you are interested in joining us for 2 hour ride, meet at the top of the dam (benches) at 10am Thursday morning. Polly & I will be leaving Angler Mtn Ranch at 9:30 and heading up the bike path toward Dillon. The weather looks great all day Thursday.

Ride of Silence Bike Ride May 16

Wednesday May 16 is the Ride of Silence, which Summit Biking will participate in this year. The ride is done in silence to honor all those bicyclists who have died due to automobile accidents. Jeff Ferber is one of those listed. He was a close personal friend who died on a bike ride from Silverthorne, May 2004. Many others are listed on the memorial page on the Ride of Silence web site. If you are interested you can find the history of the ride and more information at http://www.rideofsilence.org/memoriam.php.

We will meet on Lodgepole Street in Dillon, just down from the amphitheater, where the recpath begins at 9:30. The ride will be to the west end of Frisco. We will go at a slower pace than normal and ask riders to be silent during the event. Hopefully we will never know another person on this list. Once at Jeff's bench (located where the recpath starts up to Copper) the Ride of Silence is over and you can either return or join me for a ride to Copper and around the lake.

Thursday - perfect weather for a bike ride around the lake

Join us Thursday morning at 10am for a ( ~17mi ) ride around Lake Dillon. Meet at the benches where bike path from Silverthorne meets the path on the dam.

We will be leaving Angler Mtn Ranch at 9:30 heading up the path and picking up some fellow Silverthornians along the way.

This is a causal ride, no one gets left behind.

2018 Dues Reminder

Summit Biking 2018 Dues Reminder

This is just a quick reminder for anyone who intends to join us for the 2018 season and hasn't yet taken care of renewing their membership. If you have already done so, thank you very much. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

We are increasing our dues this year to help offset the club's increase in insurance premiums. The new dues rate is $15/individual or $25/couple. Our definition of "couple" is very loose. It applies to any two people who sign up together and pay at the same time with a single PayPal charge or one $25 check. PayPal is the clubs preferred method. Dues are due by May 1, 2018. If you absolutely refuse to use PayPal, you can send a check, along with your signed waiver to Summit Biking Inc. PO Box 2184, Silverthorne, CO 80498-2184. This is our new mailing address. Your dues must be paid in full in order to participate in any rides or other club activities.

Ride the Rockies -- One Day Event

Ride the Rockies is offering a one day event in Steamboat (June 12) this year people may be interested in. The cost is $90 and includes among other things a camping spot, either indoors or outdoors. Full description is below.

Despite the snow in Colorado yesterday, the cycling season is definitely upon us. This is the perfect time to get your bikes out of the garage, get a tune up and start increasing your mileage. The RTR/PTP team is out at Sea Otter Classic in California right now meeting with potential sponsors, expo vendors and lots of cyclists. It is so much fun to see all the bicycles and activities. We are bringing alot of new ideas and friends back home with us to make your experiences on the Denver Post Community Foundation signature bike tours better than ever. Do hope you can join us!

The route and host communities for the 2018 Pedal The Plains presented by Viaero Wireless will be announced on Wednesday April 25th at the State Capital with Governor John Hickenlooper at 10:15am. It is so hard not to just reveal it right now - it is going to be a great year for Pedal The Plains! We have some exciting and new things happening and some great communities involved!

Steamboat Loop: Join us for 1 Day of RTR

We know it is not possible to always do the full week of Ride The Rockies so this year we have provided the option to do just one day - The Steamboat Loop.

It is a great loop that really showcases Yampa River Valley as well as providing some of the challenges that is part of every Ride The Rockies routes. This loop is the same loop as Stage 1 of the 2015 USA Pro Challenge except the direction is changed. The terrain is rolling along the route but riders will hit the "Three Witches," a series of hills on the southeast corner of the trail on Twentymile Road near Oak Creek. This will provide some challenge but fun. Oak Creek Canyon will provide the open valley meadows, with mostly flat, mostly straight highway to the south. Two well stocked aid stations with Skratch Labs hydration and Steamboat based Honey Stinger waffles, plus food vendors to supplement.

At the Finish you will be greeted by a community meal, shower trucks, Odell Beer and some great entertainment so you can hang out and enjoy. One Day Riders are welcome to enjoy outdoor or indoor camping facilities so they can travel to Steamboat on Monday and enjoy the festivities on Tuesday without worrying about a long drive back home.
