Hello Summit Bikers,Next week's ride, October 3, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The ride is being coordinated by Don Hanson. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 10:30 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy, but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. Pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two. There will be a picnic at North Pond in Silverthorne, following the ride. Plan to bring something to share, as well as your drink and sandwich. As the cold weather is starting to settle in this is likely the last ride of the season. If the wet weather returns and there is a need to cancel Don will send out an email Sunday night. It has been a wonderful season. Thank you for the rides.Ride Safe!John Bowyer

Bike Ride September 26
Hello Summit Bikers:Some may be surprised I am still involved in organizing but deal with it. Time for the long awaited "Ice Cream Ride" to take place.
The ride Monday September 26th is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points: North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 10AM (A group riders - faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 10:30AM (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9). Note the time change, since the weather will be cool in the morning.
The reward for the trip will be a picnic hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne. They will have a propane grill available for those who want to cook. Please bring something to eat AND SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS as well as your drink. Bob is making the ice cream so we all need to do our part and bring a side dish. For some reason this tends to draw the biggest crowd of the season -:)
Below are the details from Bob:
I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 9/26. I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there. The picnic will be on our deck and in the house so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch since we don't really have a lawn and the view is prettier from the deck anyway. We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. The deck rail is 2x8 flat so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.
From the Silverthorne Elementary School which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Rd., then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail. We are the 4th house on the left and the address is: 0137 Crescent Moon Trail. For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.
We give extra point for those who ride up to the house but if you are driving we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac. Plus, you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past. About 6 can park in our driveway but you will have to back down to get out. If you are concerned just carpool up from the elementary school OR this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play -:)
Bob's home phone is 262-6123 if any questions or problems. His cell is (405)210-6222 if you are calling while we are on the ride.
Depending on weather there will only be one or two rides after this one.
See you next Monday. I will send out another email if inclement weather and change of plans.Ride Safe!John Bowyer

Monday 8/29 Bike Ride
Hello Summit Bikers,
The ride that we have planned for Mon 8/29 is a ride to Fremont Pass up the new rec path. I would suggest parking at the west end of Frisco. Riding from there to where the trail splits (right goes to Vail pass) continue straight to the new section of the rec path that goes south toward Fremont Pass. Watch for sand on the road and grates at the edges.
Due to the steepness of Rt. 91 it is easy to start going too fast on your way down so please use caution. The return from the top of Fremont Pass is on the right side of the highway. At the new bridge stay right and use the ramp to enter the rec path. Watch for riders on the bridge. Please remember we are the ambassadors of good biking etiquette -:)
I would encourage everyone to bring chairs since seating at the west end of Frisco is limited. Please bring a drink and sandwich and something to share with you fellow riders.
See you on Monday morning! If it is raining at 9AM, please consider the ride cancelled.
Thanks,
Pat Crum

Monday - August 22 Ride
Hello Summit Riders,
Next week's ride, 8/22 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin, or Loveland Pass. Your choice!! We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 AM.
I suggest avoiding the rec path through Keystone as more tourists may make it busy. The suggested way is to turn right on Elk Drive going through the fence to Keystone Ranch Road and going left through the River Run Area of Keystone (groups often gather back up in River Run since this is convenient for bathroom and water) to Montezuma Road and then to Montezuma. Anyone not familiar with this route should let me know so we can match you up with another rider. Please do not gather in the middle road at the top of Montezuma Rd. When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road. For those who want do a little more ride proceed out to Keystone Ranch on return.
I will have picnic supplies so please bring a sandwich and your drink. Covid has seemed to stifle our after-bike-ride picnics and sharing of some of our favorite dishes. I always thought that was a fun part of the ride! Even though covid is still with us, I think most of us feel pretty comfortable being around each other in the outdoors. Please join us for lunch and bring something to share. This Monday is our annual meeting so I'm hopeful that everyone can attend and enjoy the meeting and lunch together.
Please wear name tags from any organization to the picnic if you have them. Also, we ask all riders to be back to the start by NOON so we can picnic and then have our annual meeting.
Thanks and ride safe,
Pat Crum

This Morning’s Ride - Mon 8/15
Hello summit bikers!
Well I'm checking the weather and it appears to just be cloudy this morning and no thunderstorms until 1PM so the ride is a go. Not sure about the picnic at N. Pond. Probably somewhat iffy. We will see.
I'll see you at Heeney Rd at 9:30AM!!
Also, John Bowyer is looking for some help with leading these rides particularly after the end of this month. He is phasing out of this role and needs some folks to step up. It really doesn't take much time and effort so please consider it.
Thanks
Pat Crum

Monday 8/15 Ride Change
Hello Summit Bikers,
We have a change of plans for tomorrow's bike ride. The Ute Pass/Ice Cream Ride has been cancelled due to covid. Instead, we will ride to Green Mountain Reservoir. Tomorrow's forecast does not look good so if it is raining at 9AM please consider the ride cancelled.
If not, the start of the ride is at the intersection of Rt. 9 and Heaney Rd. Approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30AM. Most of the parking is on Rt. 9 at the intersection of Heeney Road. Be careful crossing Rt. 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Rd is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. Please pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two.
Afterwards, we will have a picnic at N. Pond in Silverthorne. N. Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Rd. And Rt. 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and a sandwich (no grill). Be sure to wear name tags especially at the picnic. We do not rent the facility so hopefully it will not be in use.
One other thing, if you are not sure if you have paid or not just send an email to Chip Babbit (cdbabbitt@comcast.net).
We plan to reschedule the Ute Pass/Ice Cream ride later this year. If weather continues to look rainy I will send out another email later this evening. Hope to see everyone tomorrow.

Mon August 15th Ride and Ice Cream!!
Hello Summit Bikers:
The ride Monday August 15th is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points: North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:45AM (A group riders - faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30AM (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9). Some may remember that we did Ute Pass a couple weeks ago. We are doing it again - this time to get the ice cream!!

As a special treat, Bob intends to make some ice cream which will go as far as it goes, since he never knows how many people will be there. For some reason this tends to draw the biggest crowd of the season -:)

Annual Meeting Change and August 1 Ride
Hello Summit Bikers,
There are several changes to the published rides over the next few weeks. The annual meeting will be held August 22. In order to leave time for the meeting the ride that day will be to Montezuma. Several other rides have been changed and they can be found on the web site or just wait and be surprised when the weekly email comes out.
Next Monday, August 1 we will once again venture outside Summit County to East Vail. The ride will be from Big Horn Park, starting at 10 am. For those who would like to carpool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am. Carpools are recommended as parking is tight. Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail through Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards. If the chance of rain is high, I will put out an email Sunday evening. Big Horn Park is a nice setting for a Group potluck picnic and to socialize bring something to share as well as a sandwich and drink. This route has a lot of construction going on; however, the bike path is still open. Riders will have to pay attention and use caution, especially on the way down
Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.
Remember the tourist are in town (Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners. Use hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.
Ride safe and have fun!

Bike Ride July 25
Hello Summit Bikers,
The ride July 25 is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points; North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:45 am (faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30 am (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9). I plan to leave from Silverthorne, so if I am not at the bottom of Ute Pass at that start go without me. Ute Pass Road is North of Silverthorne about 7 miles past North Pond. This a prelude to the world famous "Ice Cream Ride" which Bob Gilson and his wife, Jay have offered to host August 15. Mark your calendars!
Following the ride, we will have a potluck lunch at North Pond. Please bring something to share with your fellow riders, as well as a sandwich and drink for yourself. I will have paper plates, plastic forks and napkins.
Hope to see you there.

New Biking Group
New cycling group for friends in Summit and beyond
This is a meet-up format and not sponsored by the Summit Biking Group. Anyone added to the group will have the ability to post a ride and add others as you like to the list. Multiple rides can be posted of various distance and elevation.
Ride start location can be anywhere in the area, any day, and any start time. Our intent is to create an email list to be used as a method to communicate rides. There is no obligation to be a ride leader per se, just to put it out there as an opportunity to ride with others.
When you receive an email announcing a ride, if you intend to join the ride, please use the "reply to author" button at the bottom of the email to reply to the person who posted the ride.
If interested in being added to the Cycling Friends google group, please send an email to Curtis Weller at cweller88@gmail.com and he will add you to the list.
Thank you and ride safe.

Bike Ride July 11
Hello Summit Bikers,
Next week's ride, July 11, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville. Be ready to ride at 10 am. This is a beautiful ride with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area. Please plan to be ready to ride. To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville. As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right. Take a right just past Safeway (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course. As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake. Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left. (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.) There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards. Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area. Please bring a pen to complete the envelope and some dollars to pay. If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area). To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the left just before the dam. To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes. We will be having a potluck lunch and riders are asked to bring something to share. Also bring your sandwich and a drink so you can socialize with your friends after the ride. Some may prefer one of the downtown restaurants. Bug spray may be needed as mosquitoes are sometimes around.
I normally ride counterclockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems. Since this is a circle those that want a shorter ride should plan to turn around. Remember this is on a road so stay to the right and watch out for potholes. The road often has a spot or two that could use some work, so do pay attention.
Since we have so many new people this year, I thought I should give everyone some of the basic info. If it is raining when the ride is to start, there will be no ride. I do look at several forecasts and will send out an email the night before, especially if we are going out of the county. Rides out of the county start at 10 am and in Summit County are at 9:30. All riders are required to use helmets (although this is not a state law it is a rule of the club). Earphones are not allowed due to safety concerns.
We expect the new section of recpath to open going up Freemont Pass on Wednesday at 4 pm. We will meet at the ribbon cutting at 4 and ride the new section. Those that want to continue up the pass are free to do so. For those that do ride on, the road down is steep as often has gravel on the edge, watch your speed coming down.
Most of all ride safe and have fun!

NO RIDE JULY 4th
Hello Summit Bikers,
There will be no ride on July 4. In general, the County is very crowded over the July 4th weekend, and it is risky to ride. We will have a ride July 11. Also mark your calendars for the grand opening July 13 at 4 pm. The path is likely to be open prior to this, possibly this weekend. Let's hope the weather pattern changes soon.

Bike Ride June 27
Hello Summit Bikers,
Next week's ride, June 27 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin or Loveland Pass. We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 am. I suggest avoiding the rec path through Keystone as more tourists may make it busy. The suggested way is to turn right on Elk Drive going through the fence to Keystone Ranch Road and going left through the River Run Area of Keystone (groups often gather back up in River Run, since this is convenient for bathroom and water) to Montezuma Road and to Montezuma. Anyone not familiar with this route should let the me know so we can match you up with another rider. Please do not gather on the road at the end of Montezuma Road. When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road. For those who want to do a little more ride out to Keystone Ranch on return. I will have the picnic supplies so bring a sandwich, something to share and your drink. Hope the weather is as good as it was last week. Please wear name tags from any organization at the picnic.

Re: [Summit Biking] Bill Tracy
Such devastating and sad news. Inevitable, but way too soon. So good to have seen him last Saturday at the amphitheater. Can't imagine Jeanne's heart break.
He smiles upon us all from heaven.
Such a loss to us all here upon this earth.

June 20 Bike Ride
Hello Summit Bikers,Next week's ride, June 20, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. This ride was canceled previously due to snow and there is a chance for showers Monday, but it looks like in the afternoon. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30 am. Pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two.Afterwards, we will have a picnic at North Pond in Silverthorne. North Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Road and Route 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and a sandwich (as we will not have a grill). Be sure to wear name tags, especially at the picnic. Keep in mind your coordinator (me) is really old and forgetful. We do not rent the facility so hopefully it will not be in use.For new people the rule is if it is raining at 9 am do not bother going. One other thing if you are not sure if you have paid or not, just send an email to Chip Babbit (cdbabbitt@comcast.net).I do need help to run the bikes rides, as I am trying to phase out. It is fairly easy to coordinate. Ride coordinators are especially needed after August 20, when I will be gone for a month.

Fw: Gap on Dillon Dam Road Rec Path
Hello Summit Bikers,
I mentioned this this morning but since it is so dangerous, I wanted to notify all of you. Pam, who was on today's ride took pictures and emailed the Summit County Open Space and Trails Director and it will be repaired. In the meantime, it is critical that everyone pay attention when passing the bollards closest to Dillion along the dam. As shown by Pam's picture below a tire will fit in the crack and if this happens it could result in a serious accident.
Ride Safe and see you next week.

Bike Rides
When you send out the email to the group send it to: summitbiking@googlegroups.com and do a BCC to summitbiking.8VAhc-3usR2pZC@blogger.com . The second email puts the message on our website and we use a BCC so people can fill it with junk.
I will be at the June 6 ride. Not sure about June 13. The State Square Dance meet is June 9 - 12.

May 23 Bike Ride Canceled
Hello Summit Bikers,
It is with a heavy heart I we need to cancel Monday's ride, May 23, from Idaho Springs. Given the amount of snow they received, and the temperature forecast for the next couple of days the best we can hope for is wet and cold, with perhaps some slick spots in shady areas. Sad, and possibly unsafe conditions for a bike ride. We will try again next week.

May 23 Bike Ride
Our next ride, May 23 will be between Idaho Springs and Georgetown and back. Be prepared to ride at 10 am. This ride is an out and back but there are some turns so new people should ride with someone. Identify yourself to me the day of the ride and we will take care of you. To get to the parking take exit 240 to the South (right) and turn into the former visitor center (almost an immediate right). There are two lots, with the further one saying employee only -- do not park there. There are no bathrooms at this location, so you may want to stop in Georgetown at the visitor center. The bike path starts between the parking lot and I 70 so we no longer need to ride through town. Parking is tight, so riders are encouraged to carpool.
We will not have a picnic as there are no facilities. A number of the participants plan to stop at Cabin Creek Brewery in Georgetown. This is the new brewery you will pass on the left just before you reach Georgetown. The fastest way to get there is to take I 70 to the Georgetown exit, go past the visitor center and take the second exit off the roundabout (headed toward Idaho Springs). The brewery is on your right next to the first lake you come to.
Riders are encouraged to use hand signals, so others are aware of turns, stops and road obstacles. Riders are encouraged to wear name tags since there are many new people. Any name tag will do as long as it shows your name.
The weather in Idaho Springs and Georgetown Monday looks great with temperatures in the mid 50s. However, there is a chance of snow both Friday and Saturday and we may have to postpone the ride to another week. An email will be sent out Sunday if this is necessary.
Ride safe and have fun!

This Monday’s Ride-5/16
As Hello Summit Bikers,
If you have not done so already get those bikes checked out and ready to ride. The first ride of the season will be May 16, in Morrison along Bear Creek. If you have not ridden in the Front Range this is a great opportunity to check out one of the trails closest to Summit County. Plan to make that Costco trip afterwards or other Front Range tasks.
Starting west of the 470 loop near Bear Creek Lake Park at the Morrison exit. There will be no picnic this week. Those wanting to stay for lunch can go to lunch at the Red Rocks Grill in Morrison. They are located at 415 Bear Creek Avenue.
Directions to Ride
To get to the start of the ride drive east on 70 toward Denver and get off on 470 south. Take 470 to the Morrison exit and turn right (West). The parking lot is on the right at the corner of S. Rooney Road and Morrison Road (across from a Philips 66 gas station). If you are late, the bike path is across Morrison Road from the parking area, then ride east under 470. The drive from exit 205 (Silverthorne) to the start is approximately 1 hour. Plan to be ready to ride by 10 am. If it appears likely that it will rain during the ride I will send an email out the afternoon before, canceling. Currently the prognosis is sunny with temps in the seventies.
This season`s rides are on the website SummitBiking.org. There is a lot of other useful information on the site such as safety tips and where Summit Bikers can get discounts at local bike shops. Members without a life time membership are strongly encouraged to visit the website and join for the 2021 bike season. This will save us administrative time before our ride. This is also a great time to tell others about our rides, since most Summit Country people are very active.
Looking forward to another great season of rides, with a wonderful group!
