https://maps.app.goo.gl/haxV3b85AUyCFstY7. Directions: take highway 9 north out of Silverthorne toward Heeney >> turn left on Heeney Rd >> parking lot is immediately to the right; additional parking is just across the highway (be very careful crossing the road!).

Thanks,

Betsy

[Summit Biking] Sept 21 - chilly but still "on"

Hey Everyone, I always add 10 degrees of warmth to the air temperature when the sun is out. Therefore, we will label today's ride a "polar bear ride". Wear your warmer bike gear and come join us!

[Summit Biking] Sept 21 Dillon Loop Ride

Hey folks,

If the weather forecast doesn't shift over the weekend, we just might have a nice day to ride. Particulars are below:

Date/Time: Sept 21. Intros and greetings around 9:20 and wheels to the ground at 9:30 am.
Meeting Point: Dillon Amphitheatre
Route: As this has been such a "counterclockwise" kind of summer for me (and because I get to decide because I'm leading the ride), we'll exit the amphitheatre parking lot and begin our circle of Dillon Reservoir going.... counterclockwise! We'll cycle over the dam, go past Frisco, and glide up the fancy, butter-smooth surface of Swan Mountain Road. You know the rest of the route back to home base at the amphitheatre.
Lunch: Bring lunch, a drink, and something to share to the pavilion, and we'll have a chat about our marvelous ride!

Hope you make it!

Hello Summit Bikers-
I just talked to Code Enforcement in Vail, and apparently we are not allowed to park at Big Horn Park if we are not on site.
For that reason, we will now meet at the new bigger lot located up Big Horn Road.  You will still exit at Exit 180 in East Vail.. turn left onto Big Horn road, and follow it ..The lot is on your left after you go under I-70.
Pic below from Apple maps-- Clearly lots of parking available!
We will meet here and start our ride from this lot at 10:00.

Link to the parking area:  (note- Google maps has not updated their satellite image of the lot, but the lot is there- see attached pic below!)

Due to logistics, there will be no lunch.
There are no picnic facilities at this lot, and we will most likely be finishing our rides at different times.

Hope to see you on Monday!

Patty

Fw: [Summit Biking] Monday August 31 Ride - 10:00 a.m. Georgetown Visitors Center

Who is ready for a little riding out of the County?  Me, me me!
The drive from Silverthorne to the Georgetown Visitor Center is about 30mins.  Do probably look at google maps in case there is a delay that day.  Be ready to ride by 10am (temp might be a blazing 55dF, high of 64 that day with thunderstorms forecasted for the afternoon.  We will keep an eye on that.).
There are plenty of picnic tables at the visitor center if you bring your own lunch.  I am NOT organizing a group lunch but instead encouraging folks to bring a lunch and enjoy that with whoever finishes close to your time as well.  I figure with all the choices we are going to be spread out with our finishing times.
We should NOT park in visitor center paved parking area.  Instead park in the dirt/gravel areas just West of their parking lot.
There are restrooms facilities inside the visitor center.

The Guanella Pass option is 11.6 miles with 3200 ft of elevation gain.  Google Maps says you should be up there in 2hr 15 min ðŸ˜Š

The Georgetown Loop Railroad, Silver Plume, Bakerville, Loveland Ski option is 1hr 46 min with 2231 ft of elevation gain.  Google Maps says this should take 1hr 46min.  You certainly will encounter fewer cars on this route, but perhaps more bears and maybe some raspberries if we get lucky!  The bike path will end in the parking lot at Loveland Valley Ski area.  There is no reason to go any further unless  you are doing bonus miles (+5) up Loveland Pass.

I always enjoy this ride.  FYI we have company here that day and Lance plans to take them to the top of Loveland Pass and then just keep going over and back to Summit County.  Anyone is welcome to join them!

Hope to see many of you there!

Hugs,

Lisa Kidd (new ride leader since they were getting desperate-don't criticize my skills please! :)

Hi Summit Bikers,

The ride for Monday is West Vail Pass.

Start time is 10:00
Meet at: Big Horn Park in East Vail.
There is parking at the park, but not a ton. Carpooling is highly encouraged!!
There may be some construction traffic up near the pass, so please keep that in mind!

Google Directions to the park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail

If the parking is full, there are two nearby options:

The first is near the inital exit..after taking the exit, turning left, and crossing under I-70, there is a lot on your left:

Route options:  All options are out and back-
1. Ride up to top of Vail pass- Total miles is 19.7 mi, 2,172 ft of climbing.
Extra credit riding if you want to cruise down to Copper and return to Big Horn Park... (extra 10-11 miles)
2. Ride up the path toward Vail Pass about 6 miles, but before taking the right turn to go under
I-70, stay straight and continue a few blocks more up to a culdesac type turn around. Good option for those not wanting to do the steepest part of the climb to the pass!
3. Ride to Minturn

Lunch: Big Horn is a nice area for lunch-  pavillion, picnic tables, and bathrooms on site,  so bring a sandwich and drink, and something to share!

Hope to see you Monday!

Monday June 17 Ride from Dillon Amphitheater (Choose your own adventure)

Hi Summit Bikers,

The published ride for Monday is "Glorious Boreas", but since we have not had a volunteer to lead this ride, we will have a "choose your own adventure" ride starting from the Dillon Amphitheater at 9:30 where we are more familiar with the routes.

Options:

Unless Swan Mountain Road is open, I will probably ride Tour de Soda.

There will not be a picnic lunch afterwards.  Lunches have been very poorly attended. We hope for a better turnout next week at West Vail Pass.

We still need a volunteer leader for the following ride:
9/21: Green Mountain Reservoir

Thanks to these volunteers:
Patty will lead 8/24: West Vail Pass
Lisa Kidd will lead 8/31: Georgetown to Guanella or Loveland Ski Area
Lisa will also lead 9/14: Ute Pass
Polly & Stephan will lead 9/28, route TBD and weather permitting.

See you Monday,
Roberta

Group Ride August 10

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week's ride, August 10 is either to Copper or Vail Pass starting at the Dillon Amphitheater parking lot.  Be at the parking lot by 9:20 so we are all ready to roll by 9:30. A picnic will follow around noon, so plan to be back by then.  Bring something to eat and a dish to share with your friends, as well as what you would like to drink.  Remember to bring those name tags and mingle with others at the picnic.

Be cautious riding Vail Pass as there are many downhill people taking the shuttles up.  In addition, use hand signals, and keep others informed when passing.

With our ride leader out for the remainder of the season, it is important that some of you step up to lead a ride.  Leading is not difficult, emails from previous rides are available in our blog.  Meeting, identifying new people, and getting the group moving are the important tasks of the leaders.  So simple, even I can do it!  Talk to either Polly or Roberta to find out more.

Ride safe and have fun!

August 3 Bike Ride and Meeting

Hello Summit Bikers,

Our wonderful leader is out so I have been asked to pitch in.  For some reason she thinks I know the rides.  This week's ride is in connection with our annual meeting so please try to attend.

Start Time: 9:30 a.m.
Meeting Point: Dillon Amphitheatre parking lot
Annual Meeting & Lunch: Dillon Amphitheatre Pavilion after the ride - Bring a sandwich and something to share. If you'd like to enjoy something sweet during the business meeting, there will likely be some impressive desserts to enjoy.

Route:  We' are doing a repeat of the Montezuma/Loveland Pass route that we did in late June. I suggest doing the Montezuma ride so you are back in time for the annual meeting, but you are free to choose.  We will regroup in River Run at the bathrooms and where the road turns to dirt at Montezuma. We will ride to Keystone and take the path through the fence.  Anyone not familiar should pair up with a regular.  Please get off to the side of the road in Montezuma.

***Even if you don't ride on Monday, please feel free to come to the lunch and annual meeting.***

Ride Safe,

John Bowyer

July 27th Ride - Silverthorne Rambler - 9:30 a.m.

Hi Team,

The term "rambler" is an accurate one for this ride, as it comprises twists and turns that will require the guidance of Charlie Shofnos as our mighty lead and cue sheets to refer to if you are riding faster or slower than the main group of cyclists.
  • Start time: 9:30 a.m.
  • Meeting Place: Dillon Amphitheatre parking lot
  • Route: From the Amphitheatre, we will (r)amble down the recpath corkscrew to the hills of Silverthorne. There are many turns but most of them are easy to follow once you are riding the route. The recpath does go by the outlets (watch for walkers) and the route does cross Route 9 twice so caution is advised. Once we reach the Hamilton Creek area, please note this important reminder: Please do not ride to Lakeview Circle (at the top of Hamilton Creek).  This is a private road and we have been requested not to ride on it.
Looking forward to seeing you on Monday!

[Summit Biking] July 13 Pedal The Peninsula - updated link & more info

Hey Everyone,

New gpx link: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/56089172 - cue sheets will be provided.

Start time: 9:20 gather to discuss route; 9:30 am wheels to the ground.

Remember to bring: a camp chair, lunch, drink, and something to share. We'll carve out an area adjacent to the kayak lot to have lunch. Weather looks good with partly cloudy conditions and 70s by the end of the ride.

Meeting points along the route: While the bike path from Kayak to Valley View Road is relatively straight forward, the route becomes very twisty-turny once we ascend to the Highlands. We will designate a couple of meeting points to ensure that no one gets lost along the way.

Safety: wear bright clothing and use a  rear flashing light on your bike for best visibility on the road. The Highlands area is sparsely trafficked, but it is still necessary to be watchful and ride single file in the presence of traffic.

Feel free reach out if you have any questions or concerns,
Betsy

  • Route: We'll take the recpath from the Kayak Lot and cycle to Summit County High School. From there, we'll ramble up and around the eastern side of Breckenridge before returning to the Kayak Lot. Cue sheets will be provided. Click here for the gpx file. If you need more saddle time once we finish, feel free to continue up the recpath toward Copper Mountain.
  • Lunch - we'll have a picnic lunch/tailgate party in an area of the parking lot that we hope to make extremely obvious. Bring a camp chair plus a sandwich, drink, and a little something to share.
Thanks and see you on Monday!

[Summit Biking] June 29 Green Mountain Reservoir

***This route is different than the one listed on the SBG calendar***

Hey Everyone,

We will be doing a make up ride around Green Mountain Reservoir since we missed this route a few weeks ago due to rain.

Meeting Place:  Green Mountain Reservoir Parking Lot - take highway 9 toward Heeney >> turn left on Heeney Rd >> parking lot is immediately to the right  (https://maps.app.goo.gl/haxV3b85AUyCFstY7); additional parking is available directly across highway 9.

Start Time: 9:30 AM; carpool or arrive a little early, as parking is quite limited.

Route: Follow Heeney Road to the bridge. Road conditions are good until you reach the bridge. Past that, prepare for a plethora of potholes and gravel patches. Turn around where the road ends at highway 9 (Total mileage: 21.4 miles | 1,404 ft elevation).

Lunch: None planned for today.

While the weather forecast for June 29 looks good with a high of 74 and sunny, always, check the blog for ride updates prior to showing up.

Looking forward to seeing you,
Betsy

[Summit Biking] ROUTE CHANGE for June 22 - NOW Dillon to Montezuma

***The SBG calendar will not reflect this route change.***

Hey Everyone,

Dodging road work is dicey business this summer. A blessing (for much needed repair) and a curse (for dedicated road cyclists), there are  plenty of improvements happening on the Maryland Creek route. Therefore, we're doing a switch-a-roo tomorrow and riding from Dillon Amphitheatre to Montezuma and back instead.

Meeting Place: No change here, we're still meeting at Dillon Amphitheatre parking lot.

Time: Gather at about 9:20 AM; wheels to the ground at 9:30 AM.

Route: We'll follow a route that is familiar to most of the group. Let us know if you don't know the route so we can get you there and back. We'll stop in Keystone, purple bus stop, to use the facilities and to decide who is going to Montezuma versus who is turning around. More details tomorrow.

Safety: The road from Keystone to Montezuma is in its usual state of disrepair, so be mindful of divots, gravel, and other obstacles going both ways. BIG, bad note: About 0.4 miles from the city limit of Montezuma (see 5mph warning sign and a speed bump that is also our turn-around point), a very uneven, torn up patch of road spans both lanes. Cycle slowly and carefully through this small area.

Lunch: We're still planning on it! Bring a drink, sandwich, and something to share. We'll dine at the pavilion.

Many thanks to Charlie S. for giving me a heads up about Maryland Creek Route. Your flexibility around tomorrow's route change (and near future ones...as there will be more, I promise....) is much appreciated!

[Summit Biking] June 22 Buffalo Mtn / Maryland Creek Ride

Greetings Team,

I did an early morning pre-ride of this route today. Like most mornings on a bike, I was greeted by a cool breeze and a panorama of mountains blanketed with various shades of green and topped with just a hint of snow. The view alone just makes you want to keep pedaling! If you enjoy hills (or roller coaster rides), you'll enjoy this week's route--as just when you're tiring of an uphill stretch, you'll get a rush of downhill as a reward.

Date: Monday, June 22
Start Time: 9:30 am
Meeting Place: Dillon Amphitheatre
Route to Maryland Creek Park:
  • From Dillon Amphitheatre, descend the corkscrew toward the left side of Lowe's. Cycle up Wildernest Rd./Ryan Gulch Rd. to the top. Safety note: "uphill" cyclists are permitted to ride on the left-side pedestrian path all the way up to Lily Pad Lake parking lot.
  • Descend about one mile on the road before turning L onto Twenty Grand Dr. and R onto Royal Buffalo Dr. Safety note: cycle conservatively due to speed bumps and rough patches of road.
  • At the bottom of the hill (at Lowe's traffic light), turn L. Use Adams Ave. and Brian St. to go south past the Target and Smith Ranch.
  • Cycle through Eagle's Nest to Summit Sky Ranch and down to Maryland Creek Park.
Return Route - Options:
  • Similar route back: Return the way you came but omit the Buffalo Mtn climb (Total: ~20 miles, 2,200 ft elevation).
  • More elevation: Return the way you came and include a second trip up Buffalo Mountain (Totals: ~24 miles, ~2,639 ft elevation) GPX file: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/52849124
  • Less elevation: If you are officially done with hills for the day, the cue sheet will offer an option for a flatter return.
Cue Sheets: Given that I've omitted a number of steps, cue sheets will be provided.

Safety: This ride comprises a good amount of road sharing with light neighborhood traffic, which will warrant single file riding, bright clothing, and flashing rear bike lights.

Lunch: Bring a sandwich, drink, and something to share. We'll eat lunch at the pavilion.

***As always, check the SBG blog for any changes that may occur between now and the ride start.***

See you on Monday!

[Summit Biking] June 15 Copper or Vail Pass from Dillon Amphitheater

Hey Team:

Even when safety is practiced...stuff can still happen

Cycling with a group like SBG is safer than cycling alone. It keeps us alert and more visible to pedestrians, cars, and other cyclists. Even when we are riding together and exercising safe practices, significant hazards exist and stuff still happens. An unfortunate example was teammate Bonni's fall last Monday. She was wearing her helmet, paying attention to activity on the path but hit a slick spot on the bridge coming into Frisco and went down hard. Bonni suffered a trochanteric hip fracture and now faces a long recovery. The team rallied on her behalf as Frisco Station #2 first responders came to the rescue--many thanks to all of you and to them. A Meal Train site has been created for Bonni if you would like to provide a meal in the next couple of weeks. Reply to me if you'd like to participate.

Monday's Ride

This will be an up-and-back ride from the Dillon Amphitheater to Copper Mountain with an option to ride to Vail Pass.  This route will comprise mostly bike paths except for a shortcut up Granite Street in Frisco. The weather forecast indicates mostly sunny and a high of 71 but always check the SBG blog  for last minute information.

  • Start time: 9:30 a.m.
  • Meeting place: Dillon Amphitheatre parking lot in front of the pavilion
  • Lunch: After the ride, bring a drink and sandwich for lunch at the pavilion; also bring a small appetizer or dessert to share.
  • Ride details:
    • Dillon to Copper Conoco Station - From the amphitheater parking lot, we'll cycle across the Dillon dam via the Dillon Reservoir Recpath. ***Be mindful of distracted pedestrians and other cyclists and please ride single file.*** Once across the dam, continue on the Dillon Reservoir Recpath to the Frisco Marina. We will cross Summit Blvd. at the light.  Immediately upon crossing turn left one block to Granite Street, right on Granite Street and continue straight to get on the TenMile RecPath (looks like it dead ends at a cul de sac but continue and look for the bike path sign to RecPath.  Right on Ten Mile RecPath and we will follow the path through Officer's Gulch to the Conoco station just before Copper Mountain. After a rest stop, we'll return the way we came.  RT mileage = ~28 miles
    • Dillon to Vail Option - At the Conoco, cross over Hwy 91 and ride through Copper Mountain along the gold course to the Vail Pass Rec Path. Follow that to the top. Backtrack the same way to return to Dillon Amphitheatre. RT mileage = ~40 miles. Map from Dillon to Vail Pass: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/51205267

Safety Homework

  • Review the "Safety" Page on the SBG website (https://www.summitbiking.org/safety).
  • The downhill bike shuttles from Vail Pass are starting up.  Beware of rapidly descending/weaving riders who are enjoying the scenery instead of paying attention to you.
  • Use hand signals so others are aware of turns, stops and road obstacles.  Ride single-file. When you pass someone let them know with the phrase "Good morning, on your Left". If you are in front of a group and a rider is approaching from the opposite direction, use the phrase "Rider Up".

Thanks and see you Monday!

Betsy (303-638-2549)
