R[Summit Biking] Monday - October 7th Ride - Green Mountain Reservoir - 10AM Start

Hello Summit Bikers,

We had 7 riders last week, 5 rode to A-Basin and 2 rode to Montezuma.   "And a good time was had by all" as they say in small towns in the Midwest.

Next week's ride, October 7, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir.

The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 10 am.  It looks to be cool at the start, so wear layers.

Parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy, but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. We ride around the reservoir on the West side and return the same way.  This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir.  Pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two.

I've never done the ride, but it looks like it will be about 22 miles total or so.   Looking forward to it.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks and ride safe,

Jim Smith

Hello Summit Riders,

This week's ride, 9/30 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin, or Loveland Pass.  Your choice!!  We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 AM.   Weather looks to be nice, but dress for a chilly start.

It looks like the rec path to Keystone is now open, given the late season and smaller group taking this route should be fine.      Anyone not familiar with the ride should let me know at the start.

If Montezuma is your chosen option, please do not gather in the middle road at the top of Montezuma Rd.  When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road.  For those who want do a little more ride proceed out to Keystone Ranch on return.

I suggest we meet up at the entrance to Keystone River Run on the way out, from there we can disperse into different groups for the ride options.

This is my first time leading a ride and I haven't been to many this year due to some issues back in MN.    So don't be offended it I ask you your name multiple times.   😊

Bring a sandwich or something to eat post ride at Dillon if you would like.

Thanks and ride safe,

Jim Smith

Bike Ride 9/23

Hello Summit Bikers:

The snow did not develop so we are good for a ride tomorrow September 23.  Let's meet at Dillion Amphitheater at 10 am.  Dress warm!  The ride is around the lake and then up to Copper Mountain.  The leaves in Ten Mile Canyon are near their peak so this is a wonderful ride this time of year, with most tourist gone doing the week.  For those that desire to stay for a picnic plan to bring a sandwich and drink.  I will be unable to stay.

There will be two more rides this season, if the weather last.  This will be my last ride for the season, as I am out of the country.

Ride Safe!

Re: [Summit Biking] September 16 - Ute Pass Ride

Hey Everyone,

I was called out of state due to family matters this weekend. In other words, I cannot lead the Ute Pass ride tomorrow. If any of you would like to step up and lead, please let me know by this evening so we can get the communication out. As it stands, I'm not calling off the ride, I am simply turning it into a D.I.Y. (AKA "you're on your own if you do it") ride. A couple of details:
  1. Anyone who shows up at North Pond will be met by my husband Glenn who will likely ride with you to the intersection of Ute Pass Road and Co-9N. Ride as far toward the top as you would like and return to North Pond to join Glenn for lunch.
  2. Please be careful on this ride. While the shoulder of Co-9N is wide, the cars and trucks go pretty fast and they generally aren't looking for cyclists on the side.
Sorry to not be there. I was looking forward to cycling with you tomorrow.

Thanks,
Betsy

Fw: [Summit Biking] Monday - August 22 Ride

Hi Jim,

A good ride for September 30 is to Montezuma or Loveland Pass.  This ride was scheduled earlier this year but was canceled.  Below is a sample write up.  Change as necessary.  I will send out the October 7 ride next.

When you send out to the group, use Summitbiking@googlegroups.com in the To line.  Also do a BCC using summitbiking.8VAhc-3usR2pZC@blogger.com.  The second address goes to the bog, and we try to keep others from posting so we keep the address secret.

Hello Summit Riders,

Next week's ride, 9/30 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin, or Loveland Pass.  Your choice!!  We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at  10 AM.

I suggest avoiding the rec path through Keystone as more tourists may make it busy.  The suggested way is to turn right on Elk Drive going through the fence to Keystone Ranch Road and going left through the River Run Area of Keystone (groups often gather back up in River Run since this is convenient for bathroom and water) to Montezuma Road and then to Montezuma.  Anyone not familiar with this route should let me know so we can match you up with another rider.  Please do not gather in the middle road at the top of Montezuma Rd.  When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road.  For those who want do a little more ride proceed out to Keystone Ranch on return.

I will have picnic supplies so please bring a sandwich and your drink.  Covid has seemed to stifle our after-bike-ride picnics and sharing of some of our favorite dishes.  I always thought that was a fun part of the ride!  Even though covid is still with us, I think most of us feel pretty comfortable being around each other in the outdoors.  Please join us for lunch and bring something to share.  This Monday is our annual meeting so I'm hopeful that everyone can attend and enjoy the meeting and lunch together.

Please wear name tags from any organization to the picnic if you have them.

Thanks and ride safe,

September 9 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

This weeks ride (September 9) will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater parking lot ready to ride at 10 (time change due to cold morning) and challenge the hills of Silverthorne.  There are many turns but most of them are easy to follow once you riding the route. The recpath does go by the outlets (watch for walkers) and the route does cross Route 9 twice so caution is advised. Please print this out and have for the ride. If lost ride downhill as the recpath is along the Blue River.

A change this year: Please do not ride to Lakeview Circle (at the top of Hamilton Creek).  This is a private road and we have been requested not to ride on it.

Dillon Amphitheater – Start
Go toward the dam
Stay on Silverthorne path
to N. Pond
Rt End of Path (Allegra Dr)
Rt at stop sign (Hamilton Cr Rd)
Continue on Hamilton Creek Road
DO NOT RID UP LAKEVIEW CIRCLE
Rt on Bald Eagle
Cross Rt 9 to Golden Eagle (Careful)
Lt on Falcon Dr.
Lt on Golden Eagle
Lt on Two Cabins
Rt on Arnica Ln
Lt on Currant Way (easy to miss)

St on Maryland Creek Trail (to Summit Sky)
At T Lt on Maryland Creek Road
Lt on Maryland Creek Lane
Rt on Rt 9
Lt at N. Pond
Rt on Allegra Dr.
Lt on Recpath
Return to Start

Please bring something to eat and share with your fellow bikers, after the ride.  I suspect now that we are in September our numbers will be reduced but it should still be a great ride.

Ride safe!

No Ride September 2 -- Need Some Ride Leaders

Hello Summit Bikers,

There will be no bike ride September 2, as it is Labor Day, and the bike paths will be very busy.  I suggest staying off of bike paths until after Labor Day.  Last weekend I was at top of Vail Pass and some of the largest groups of downhill only riders were preparing to come down.  They will be everywhere in the County.

We need some volunteers to lead rides until the end of the season.  Please contact me at Bikebreck@yahoo.com.  Do not reply to Summit Biking.

Ride safe or skip the ride this week.

July 29 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Wonderful turn out for the Ice Cream Ride this week.

Next Monday, July 29 we will venture outside Summit County to East Vail.  The ride will be from Big Horn Park, starting at 10 am.  For those who would like to carpool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am.  Carpools are recommended as parking is tight.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail through Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards.  For many of us this will be our first chance to experience the revised bike path up West Vail Pass.  Big Horn Park is a nice setting for a picnic to socialize so please bring something to share as well as a sandwich and drink.

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.

Remember the tourist are in town (West Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners.  Use hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.

Ride safe and have fun!

Ride July 22 -- Ute Pass

Hello Summit Bikers,

The ride Monday July 22 is to Ute Pass.  There will be two starting points:  North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 9AM (faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30AM (shorter ride with climbing, starts where Ute Pass intersects Route 9).

After the ride we have a picnic hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne. They will have a propane grill available for those who want to cook.  Please bring something to eat AND SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS as well as your drink.  Bob is making the ice cream so we all need to do our part and bring a side dish.    (For some reason this tends to draw the biggest crowd of the season -:)

Since this is an out and back there will be no sag.  My cell is 970 393 2190, if you have a problem.

Below are the details from Bob:

I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 9/26.  I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there.  The picnic will be on our deck and in the house so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch since we don't really have a lawn and the view is prettier from the deck anyway.  We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. Bring a folding chair for the deck if you want a seat. The deck rail is 2x8 flat so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.

From the Silverthorne Elementary School which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Rd, then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail.  We are the 4th house on the left and the address is:  0137 Crescent Moon Trail.  For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.

We give extra points for those who ride up to the house but if you are driving we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac.  Plus, you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past.  About 6 can park in our driveway but you will have to back down to get out.  If you are concerned just carpool up from the elementary school OR this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play -:)

Bob's home phone is 262-6123 if any questions or problems.  His cell is (405)210-6222 if you are calling while we are on the ride.

See you next Monday.  I will send out another email if inclement weather and change of plans.

Ride Safe!

Turquoise Lake Bike Ride July 8

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week's ride, July 8, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville.  Be ready to ride at 10 am. This is a beautiful ride with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains.  We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area.  Please plan to be ready to ride.  To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville.  As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right.  Take a right just past Safeway (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course.  As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake.  Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left.  (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.)  There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards.  Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area.  Please bring a pen to complete the envelope and some dollars to pay.  If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area).  To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the left just before the dam.  To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes.  We will be having a potluck lunch, and riders are asked to bring something to share.  Also bring your sandwich and a drink so you can socialize with your friends after the ride.  Some may prefer one of the downtown restaurants.  Bug spray may be needed as mosquitoes are sometimes around.
I normally ride counterclockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems.  Since this is a circle those that want a shorter ride should plan to turn around.  Remember this is on a road so stay to the right.  The road often has a spot or two that could use some work, so do pay attention.

Since we have so many new people this year, I thought I should give everyone some of the basic info.  If it is raining when the ride is to start, there will be no ride.  I do look at several forecasts and will send out an email the night before, especially if we are going out of the county.  Rides out of the county start at 10 am and in Summit County are at 9:30. All riders are required to use helmets (although this is not a state law it is a rule of the club).  Earphones are not allowed due to safety concerns.

Currently the weather forecast is beautiful weather, but if that changes I will send out an email Sunday July 7.

Most of all ride safe and have fun!

July 1 Ride - Cancelled

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at Buffalo Mountain and beyond (misty)--not liking what I see and not trusting any weather apps right now.

The ride is cancelled; we don't want slides or crashes on Montezuma Road or anywhere else. Sorry about that.

See ya next week!
Betsy

July 1 Bike Ride - Montezuma or Loveland Pass

Looking out the window this morning, it looks a little gloomy .... however, according to the Epic Ride Weather app, here is the prediction (which I trust much more than the local weather apps). At 9:30am:

Temperature: 56.5°F to 61°F, feels like 55°F to 59.4°F
Wind: 5.7 to 10.4 mph, with gusts up to 19.9 mph
4% probability of very light precipitation

See you soon!

July 1 Bike Ride - Montezuma - more details

Time: 9:30 am

Meeting Place: Dillon Amphitheater parking lot

Lunch: Tiki Bar at Dillon Marina (opens at 11:30am) - give yourself a much-needed break from making your own sandwich; view the menu.

July 1 Bike Ride - Montezuma

On Monday, we will ring in July with a ride to the charming town of Montezuma. We'll follow the bike path from the Dillon Amphitheater (DA) parking lot to River Run Village in Keystone. Stop at the Purple Route shuttle bus stop in front of River Run Village (on Ida Belle Drive) for bathrooms and decisions. There are two options from here:
  • Option 1 River Run Village to Montezuma:- While the 5 miles of gradual uphill road conditions are tame enough, the downhill stretch will require the usual mindfulness and respect for the cracks, buckles, and potholes that have prevailed over the years. Navigate the first downhill mile by riding down the middle of the road. The next two miles will require focus before the road evens out to smoother conditions. A word of unsolicited advice: control your downhill speed by tapping your brakes, not squeezing constantly (which heats up the tires and risks explosions).
  • Option 2 -  River Run Village to Loveland Pass - This is a challenging uphill climb with very narrow shoulders. You'll reach the top of the pass in ~8-1/2 miles / ~2,600 ft. elevation. If you choose this option, some words of unsolicited advice include: 1) wear bright or neon colors for visibility; 2) use a rear flashing light; 3) go with one or more other riders, riding single-file and remembering that you are the one who stands to lose if a distracted driver fails to see you.
Looking forward to riding with you and meeting at the Tiki Bar for lunch (umbrellas for non-H20 drinks are not included)!

June 24 - Tour de Soda - route change due to construction

Hi Everyone, we will abbreviate this 33-mile ride to 28 miles due to road construction on Soda Ridge Rd coming out of the Mountain House area in Keystone

Plan on cutting through Elk Run subdivision to and from Keystone Ranch. As mentioned, staying together during this ride is advised (especially for those less familiar with the route) due to all the twists and turns.

Thanks and see you tomorrow,
Betsy

June 24 Bike Ride - Tour de Soda

If "Tour De Soda" was in the dictionary, its first definition would be "a convoluted but delightful route" and its second would be "a Cyclo-Parade of Homes through the Keystone and Dillon area". This is our route on Monday, June 24. Unless you are v-e-r-y familiar with it, I recommend that we stay together as much as possible. Cue sheets will be available for anyone who wants them.

Time: 9:30 am

Meeting Place: North Pond Park (108 Hamilton Creek Blvd, Silverthorne, CO)

Lunch: North Pond Park pavilion – there are bathrooms and covered picnic tables; bring a drink and sandwich for yourself; bring something to share (nice but not required)

Segment I: North Pond to River Run Village in Keystone

1.    Take Blue River Trail bike path from North Pond Park to the top of Dillon Dam.

2.    At ~4 miles, turn LEFT onto Summit County Recpath (becomes Dillon Reservoir Trail and then Snake River Trail as you approach Keystone).

3.    At ~12 miles, stop at the "Purple Route" bus sign in River Run Village for restroom stop.

June 17 Bike Ride - Dillon to Copper Mountain

Hi Everyone, our ride on Monday, June 17, is an up-and-back from the Dillon Amphitheater to Copper Mountain. This route will comprise mostly bike paths except for a shortcut up 7th Street in Frisco.

Details include:
Start time: 9:30 a.m.
Meeting place: Dillon Amphitheatre parking lot in front of the pavilion
Lunch: After the ride, bring a drink and sandwich for lunch at the pavilion; a snack to share with others is nice but not required

Directions:
From the amphitheater parking lot, turn left onto Lodgepole Street, then keep left onto the Dillon Reservoir Recpath. Be mindful of distracted pedestrians and other cyclists and please ride single file.

Once across the dam, follow the bike path until the red pavement ends (roughly mile 2). Then turn left to continue on the Dillon Reservoir Recpath. At about mile 4.5, turn left over the bridge and left again onto the Frisco Recpath. Follow this path to the Frisco Marina. We will cross Summit Blvd. at the light and turn left onto 7th Street. Ride until 7th dead-ends, turning right onto Temple Trail.

At the Frisco west end parking lot turn off, veer left continuing on Temple Trail / Tenmile Recpath. We will follow the path through Officer's Gulch to the Conoco station. After a rest stop (indoor bathrooms, coffee, snacks), we'll backtrack to the amphitheater.

Want less miles? More miles?
  • You can turn around at the west end parking lot or any point before the Conoco Station if you don't want to ride that far. Please tell someone in the group that you are doing this so we aren't waiting for you.
  • However, if you feel the need for more mileage, return to the bike path and continue 3.6 miles up the Tenmile Extension to Highway 91. Turn around when you reach the bridge that spans across Highway 91. Again, please let someone in the group know about this decision as well.
We are always happy to welcome new Summit County riders. Point them to the Summit Biking website so they can learn more and join the team! If needed, my contact # is 303-638-2549.

Thanks and see you soon!
