R[Summit Biking] Monday - October 7th Ride - Green Mountain Reservoir - 10AM Start
Hello Summit Bikers,
We had 7 riders last week, 5 rode to A-Basin and 2 rode to Montezuma. "And a good time was had by all" as they say in small towns in the Midwest.
Next week's ride, October 7, will be the Green Mountain Reservoir.
The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 10 am. It looks to be cool at the start, so wear layers.
Parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy, but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. We ride around the reservoir on the West side and return the same way. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir. Pay attention as there are some potholes and a rough spot or two.
I've never done the ride, but it looks like it will be about 22 miles total or so. Looking forward to it.
Hope to see you there.
Thanks and ride safe,
Jim Smith

Subject: [Summit Biking] Monday - September 30th Ride - Montezume etc...
Hello Summit Riders,
This week's ride, 9/30 will be to either Montezuma, A-Basin, or Loveland Pass. Your choice!! We will meet at the Dillon Amphitheater Parking lot ready to ride at 9:30 AM. Weather looks to be nice, but dress for a chilly start.
It looks like the rec path to Keystone is now open, given the late season and smaller group taking this route should be fine. Anyone not familiar with the ride should let me know at the start.
If Montezuma is your chosen option, please do not gather in the middle road at the top of Montezuma Rd. When you turn around in Montezuma to return stay off to the right side of the road. For those who want do a little more ride proceed out to Keystone Ranch on return.
I suggest we meet up at the entrance to Keystone River Run on the way out, from there we can disperse into different groups for the ride options.
This is my first time leading a ride and I haven't been to many this year due to some issues back in MN. So don't be offended it I ask you your name multiple times. 😊
Bring a sandwich or something to eat post ride at Dillon if you would like.
Thanks and ride safe,
Jim Smith

Re: [Summit Biking] September 16 - Ute Pass Ride
- Anyone who shows up at North Pond will be met by my husband Glenn who will likely ride with you to the intersection of Ute Pass Road and Co-9N. Ride as far toward the top as you would like and return to North Pond to join Glenn for lunch.
- Please be careful on this ride. While the shoulder of Co-9N is wide, the cars and trucks go pretty fast and they generally aren't looking for cyclists on the side.
Hello Summit Bikers,On Monday, September 16, we will ride from North Pond Park to the top of Ute Pass Road and back. There will be two starting points:***Bonus Miles: Once you reach the top of Ute Pass Road, you can bag a few additional miles by cruising downhill (about 2-ish miles) to Henderson Mill. Turn around for a few more uphill miles on your way back to the Pond. RT mileage from North Pond to Henderson Mill is 36.6 miles.***
- 9:30 AM start at North Pond Park (108 Hamilton Creek Rd, Silverthorne) - this is a 10.3-mile ride on Co-9N to the Ute Pass Road turnoff. We will be riding on a wide shoulder that is sprinkled with gravel, so be mindful. Blinking tail lights and bright clothing are encouraged--anything to make the group more visible on the highway.
- 10:00 AM start at the Ute Pass Road and Co-9N intersection - this start point offers ample parking; it is a shorter ride but is mostly uphill (about 5 or 6 miles to the top parking lot).
We will have a picnic at North Pond following the ride. Please bring something to share with your fellow riders as well as a drink and sandwich for yourself. My cell # is 303-638-2549 if you have questions or issues. I will send out another email in case of inclement weather or a change of plans.See you on Monday!Betsy

July 29 Bike Ride
Hello Summit Bikers,Wonderful turn out for the Ice Cream Ride this week.Next Monday, July 29 we will venture outside Summit County to East Vail. The ride will be from Big Horn Park, starting at 10 am. For those who would like to carpool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am. Carpools are recommended as parking is tight. Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail through Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards. For many of us this will be our first chance to experience the revised bike path up West Vail Pass. Big Horn Park is a nice setting for a picnic to socialize so please bring something to share as well as a sandwich and drink.Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.Remember the tourist are in town (West Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners. Use hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.Ride safe and have fun!John Bowyer

Ride July 22 -- Ute Pass
Hello Summit Bikers,The ride Monday July 22 is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points: North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 9AM (faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass Road at 9:30AM (shorter ride with climbing, starts where Ute Pass intersects Route 9).
After the ride we have a picnic hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne. They will have a propane grill available for those who want to cook. Please bring something to eat AND SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS as well as your drink. Bob is making the ice cream so we all need to do our part and bring a side dish. (For some reason this tends to draw the biggest crowd of the season -:)Since this is an out and back there will be no sag. My cell is 970 393 2190, if you have a problem.
Below are the details from Bob:
I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 9/26. I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there. The picnic will be on our deck and in the house so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch since we don't really have a lawn and the view is prettier from the deck anyway. We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. Bring a folding chair for the deck if you want a seat. The deck rail is 2x8 flat so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.
From the Silverthorne Elementary School which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Rd, then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail. We are the 4th house on the left and the address is: 0137 Crescent Moon Trail. For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.
We give extra points for those who ride up to the house but if you are driving we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac. Plus, you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past. About 6 can park in our driveway but you will have to back down to get out. If you are concerned just carpool up from the elementary school OR this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play -:)
Bob's home phone is 262-6123 if any questions or problems. His cell is (405)210-6222 if you are calling while we are on the ride.
See you next Monday. I will send out another email if inclement weather and change of plans.Ride Safe!John Bowyer

Turquoise Lake Bike Ride July 8
Hello Summit Bikers,Next week's ride, July 8, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville. Be ready to ride at 10 am. This is a beautiful ride with great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area. Please plan to be ready to ride. To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville. As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right. Take a right just past Safeway (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course. As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake. Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left. (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.) There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards. Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area. Please bring a pen to complete the envelope and some dollars to pay. If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area). To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the left just before the dam. To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes. We will be having a potluck lunch, and riders are asked to bring something to share. Also bring your sandwich and a drink so you can socialize with your friends after the ride. Some may prefer one of the downtown restaurants. Bug spray may be needed as mosquitoes are sometimes around.

July 1 Bike Ride - Montezuma - more details
Time: 9:30 am
Meeting Place: Dillon Amphitheater parking lot
Lunch: Tiki Bar at Dillon Marina (opens at 11:30am) - give yourself a much-needed break from making your own sandwich; view the menu.
July 1 Bike Ride - Montezuma
- Option 1 River Run Village to Montezuma:- While the 5 miles of gradual uphill road conditions are tame enough, the downhill stretch will require the usual mindfulness and respect for the cracks, buckles, and potholes that have prevailed over the years. Navigate the first downhill mile by riding down the middle of the road. The next two miles will require focus before the road evens out to smoother conditions. A word of unsolicited advice: control your downhill speed by tapping your brakes, not squeezing constantly (which heats up the tires and risks explosions).
- Option 2 - River Run Village to Loveland Pass - This is a challenging uphill climb with very narrow shoulders. You'll reach the top of the pass in ~8-1/2 miles / ~2,600 ft. elevation. If you choose this option, some words of unsolicited advice include: 1) wear bright or neon colors for visibility; 2) use a rear flashing light; 3) go with one or more other riders, riding single-file and remembering that you are the one who stands to lose if a distracted driver fails to see you.

June 24 Bike Ride - Tour de Soda
If "Tour De Soda" was in the dictionary, its first definition would be "a convoluted but delightful route" and its second would be "a Cyclo-Parade of Homes through the Keystone and Dillon area". This is our route on Monday, June 24. Unless you are v-e-r-y familiar with it, I recommend that we stay together as much as possible. Cue sheets will be available for anyone who wants them.
Time: 9:30 am
Meeting Place: North Pond Park (108 Hamilton Creek Blvd, Silverthorne, CO)
Lunch: North Pond Park pavilion – there are bathrooms and covered picnic tables; bring a drink and sandwich for yourself; bring something to share (nice but not required)
Segment I: North Pond to River Run Village in Keystone
1. Take Blue River Trail bike path from North Pond Park to the top of Dillon Dam.
2. At ~4 miles, turn LEFT onto Summit County Recpath (becomes Dillon Reservoir Trail and then Snake River Trail as you approach Keystone).
3. At ~12 miles, stop at the "Purple Route" bus sign in River Run Village for restroom stop.
Segment II: River Run Village to Keystone Ranch
1. Backtrack from River Run to the Mountain House area. Follow West Keystone Rd. until the road forks. Veer LEFT onto Soda Ridge Rd. toward the golf course. ((IF there is construction on Soda Ridge, we'll alter the course)).
2. At ~14.5 miles, turn LEFT onto Keystone Ranch Rd (at the "Ranch Golf Course and Restaurant" sign). Ride past the golf course shortcut.
3. Follow Keystone Ranch Rd. for 3.2 miles over some rolling hills and turns. You'll pass under a big Keystone Ranch sign and guardhouse.
4. Ride 0.3 miles past the guardhouse before turning LEFT to pick up Keystone Ranch Rd. again.
5. At ~18 miles, road ends (see a "White River Nat'l Forest" sign).
Segment III: Return to North Pond Park
1. Backtrack on Keystone Ranch Rd for about 3 miles (note: if you reach Soda Ridge Rd, you've gone too far).
2. Turn LEFT and weave through the fence into River Run Golf Course area—merges into Elk Spur Lane.
3. Continue straight on Elk Spur Lane. It will become Elk Circle.
a) Turn LEFT on River Course Drive (stay to far right on what appears to be a sidewalk (It is the community path).
b) The community path cuts LEFT at the Nordic Center (see "The River Course Clubhouse" sign). It looks like a golf cart path but is not. Ride downhill and veer RIGHT when the path forks. Warning: the path is steep in places and contains some gravel. Continue on the path as it intersects Carter Ct. and Stag Trail.
c) After crossing Buck Ridge Rd., veer right onto the red paved bike path.
d) At end of red pavement, turn LEFT on Cove Blvd.
e) LEFT onto Summit Drive à LEFT onto Vail Circle à LEFT onto Summit Drive / Cove Blvd.
f) LEFT on Whispering Pines Ranch Road (go 0.3) à LEFT on Forest Glen Road (go 0.2) à RIGHT on Royal Coachman Blvd (go 0.2).
g) Turn LEFT onto the bike path at Swan Mountain and ride toward Dillon Dam.
h) Go down the "corkscrew" path that takes you down to the Silverthorne Outlet Mall and baseball field.
i) At the stop light under the I-70 overpass, turn LEFT on Wildernest Road à RIGHT on Adams (next stop light) à LEFT onto Brian Ave (past the Summit Ford dealership).
j) RIGHT on Annie Rd.(behind the Target store) à LEFT on Adams à RIGHT on Ruby Ranch Road à Cross Route 9 / Blue River Parkway à LEFT on Blue River Circle and return to North Pond.
k) Time for lunch!
Don't let these instructions scare you. This is a challenging, but interesting 30+ mile ride with varying terrain, epic scenery, and lots of homes. If you have questions or would like ideas on a more abbreviated ride, text me at 303-638-2549. Check out the Summit Biking blog for updates before the ride.
Thanks,
Betsy

June 17 Bike Ride - Dillon to Copper Mountain
- You can turn around at the west end parking lot or any point before the Conoco Station if you don't want to ride that far. Please tell someone in the group that you are doing this so we aren't waiting for you.
- However, if you feel the need for more mileage, return to the bike path and continue 3.6 miles up the Tenmile Extension to Highway 91. Turn around when you reach the bridge that spans across Highway 91. Again, please let someone in the group know about this decision as well.
