Idaho Springs Ride August 29 Canceled

Reluctantly we need to cancel today's ride.  The rain is moving in faster than anticipated.  There will be no ride next week on Labor Day but there will be a ride September 12.

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride will be from Idaho Springs to Georgetown and back.  Some riders may want to go on to either Silver Plume or Loveland Ski Area and return. We will meet at the Courtney Riley Cooper Park in Idaho Spring at 10 a.m. ready to ride.   To get to the park take exit 240 from I 70, turn left on 13 Ave (towards town).  At Colorado Boulevard go right.  The park is on the left next to the creek.  The drive takes about 45 minutes.  We will have  a grill so bring something to cook and something to share with your friends.  As always bring what you would like to drink.

In case of a breakdown on the day of the ride call my cell number is 970-333-1806.  Please do not leave messages but I will try to answer.

It has been a great season for me .  Others will be sending out the emails for September as I will be out of town.

Ride safe and have fun!

Pro Ride VailSprint

This Thursday is the sprint from Vail to the top of Old Route 6(where the bike path meets the road as you ride down towards Vail from Vail Pass).  The first riders leave Vail for what is expected to be a 25 minute sprint at 1 pm.  For those wanting to ride up to see this event I plan to leave from the West Frisco Parking area at 11am.  This should get us to the finish line prior to the first sprinters finishing.  I have been told that this is too late to start and that we should be at the finish by 8 am, so make up your own mind.  Bring water, a rain jacket, something to eat and a bike lock.  The last riders should finish around 3:30 pm.

For those wanting to see the finish Saturday in Breckenridge a jumbotron will be set up in Blue River Plaza (where the visitor center is located on Main Street).  This location will allow visitors to see the event on the big screen as well as be near the finish.  Traffic may be a major problem so I would recommend being in Breckenridge no later than 1 pm.

Thank you

Summit Biking Members,

On behalf of the Board of Summit Biking, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the individuals who made the 4th Annual Bob Guthrie Memorial/Circle the Summit Ride possible. This year's event was the best yet with just over 600 riders, great routes, fantastic weather, food, aid stations and ambiance.

In particular I would like to thank Bob Chebul and Erin Kneedler, this years co-chairs as well as the various committee chairs; Monique Mustard and Deb Nelson (publicity), Arnie & Shelly Henden (registration), Norman & June Prince (food & beverage), Anne Hamilton & Jan Dudley (Aid Stations), Dennis Kaiser and Jim Roberts (signage), Bob Giordano (facilities), Mike & Pat Dahly (course marshals) and Dan Schweitzer (web site). Thanks to to all of you who volunteered for various jobs necessary to making the ride a sauces.

Next years ride will be co-chaired by Erin Kneedler and Norm Stoller. This will mark the 5th year that Erin has Chaired the ride!  As many of you may not know, Erin is the originator of this ride, bringing the idea to Bob Guthrie and myself only a couple months before Bob G died.  Many thanks to Erin and Avalanche Physical Therapy.

Regards,

Bob Faucett, President of Summit Biking

Final Cornering Clinic

To all Summit Biking members,

The previous 2 cornering clinics put on by Sam Parker of Podium Sports have been a great success.  Most all of the seniors that have participated in the 1.5 hour clinic enjoyed it and learned something new.

Sam has agreed to put on one final Clinic.  I had a wait list of 10 people, all of which have signed up for this final Clinic.  We have room for 12 more registrants, so it will be 1st come, 1st served again for the final 12 spots.

DO NOT REPLY TO THIS E-MAIL AS THAT WILL NOT GET YOU ON THE LIST!!!

Please reply to Faucettdds@Comcast.net if you want to participate.

This clinic will be on Thursday, August 18th at 9.00am in the morning.

The location will be at the High School south parking lot, BUT, Sam is checking to see if with school starting, there will be a conflict.  Assume it will take place there unless you hear from me otherwise.

Again, do not reply to this e-mail but send your desire to participate to:

Faucettdds@Comcast.net.

Thanks to Sam and Podium Sports for doing this for Summit Biking members and remember that Podium is also offering Summit Biking members a 15% discount on non-sale items.  Of the 15% saved, 5% goes back to our Youth Program.

August 15 Ride -- Green Mountain Reservoir

Hello Summit Bikers,
The derailer talk given by Team Managers was well attended last week.  For those that would like to get a closer look at just what to adjust on your bike stop by the store some time, identify yourself as with Summit Biking and ask your questions.  It would be better to go in with a few friends so we are not going in one at a time.  In addition, Team Managers asked me to pass along that on Thursday afternoon they have a ride from their store starting around 5:30.  They ride various places depending on who shows up.  Thank you Stewart and Brad for taking the time to show us a few things as well as arranging the lunch deal at the Holiday Inn.
This week's ride will be Green Mountain Reservoir.  To get to the start drive about 17 miles south of the I 70 route 9 intersection at Silverthorne north towards Steamboat.  Parking is located mostly on the right side of route 9 at Heeny Road (Heeny Road goes to the left).  Be careful crossing the road as there is high speed traffic.  Be ready to ride at 9:30 am.  For those who would like to carpool meet at the North Pond parking lot in Silverthorne by 8:45 am.  The picnic will be at North Pond after the ride.  North Pond is located on the right side of route 9 as you leave Silverthorne across from the elementary school.  It is at the corner of Hamilton Creek and route 9.  We will have a grill available. So plan to bring whatever you want to cook as well as something to share with your friends as well as to drink.  We will plan to be back at North Pond around 11:45 am to noon.
My cell phone does not work around Green Mountain so I suggest you team up with a friend.
Our web site has a lot of information including a calendar of all our rides as well as a large amount of safety information.  Visit www.Summitbiking.org to see this information and pass the link on to others that may have an interest in riding in the Summit.
Ride safe and have fun.

Recpath construction projects update

At this time, the Dillon Dam Recpath is open to thru traffic from Frisco to Dillon. The path has been repaved, and cycle traffic can now use recpath through the construction zone. The road work is still in progress. Please note that the Recpath and road will have to be closed completely for approximately 4-days later this month in order for the contractor to excavate a significant trench across the road and recpath for the new outlet pipe from Old Dillon Reservoir. I'll provide more details as they are developed.

Also, Excl Energy is completing emergency repair work on the gas pipeline along Ten Mile Canyon. Expect one-lane closures during the week.

Contact Brad Eckert, Summit County Open Space and Trails with any questions (668-4213).

Hi Everybody,
I know that some of you have volunteered to help out on the Pro Challenge road bike stage race which comes through Breck in late August.  Well, don't forget that there is also a mountain biking stage race in and around Breck in mid-August – The Breck Epic.   This year, the Summit Fat Tire Society is helping The Greenspeed Project, organizer of the race, to gather volunteers for the week of August 13-19th.  Consider joining these folk doing everything from helping aid stations to course marshaling.  Volunteer stints are typically 2 to 4 hours long; no prior experience needed.  PLUS, volunteers are promised a big party and awesome swag from the Epic.  Details and sign-up sheet are on the Summit Fat Tire Society web wite -- http://www.summitfattire.org/?page_id=421

August 8 Ride -- Double Swan Mountain -- and Tech Talk

Hello Summit Bikers,
Turquoise Lake was beautiful and the rain held off.
This week we have a special treat arranged for everyone.  We will meet at Team Managers near the Holiday Inn (along the Dam Road, close to Frisco).  Stewart Voutour of Team Managers will be giving a tech talk about adjusting derailers at 9 am in the paring lot.  If you are like me I seem to always make things worse when I try to make an adjustment.  The ride will start at 9:30 am, after the tech talk.  The original plan was to ride around the lake but with the Dam being shut this is not possible.  The new plan is to ride over Swan Mountain and to River Run at Keystone and to return again via Swan Mountain to Team Managers between 11:30 and noon.  Stewart has been good enough to arrange with the Holiday Inn Sports Bar to provide lunch for a 20 percent discount.  In addition, a free beer will be included.  For those who do not want to ride Swan Mountain the option is to ride to Breckenridge and return ,riding on to the Dam construction if you arrive back before 11:30 and want to have lunch.  I will try to get an idea of the people who intend to come back for lunch prior to the ride so let someone know if you plan to start the ride early.
If there are any emergencies on the ride I can be contacted at 970 333-1806.  Do not leave a message as I do not listen to them.
Ride safe and have fun!
