Another Friday morning ride around the lake

Meet at 11am on the Dam at the usual place (benches where bike path comes up from Dillon = Pritchit’s Corner).  We’ll ride around the lake and refuel at Jersey Boys (Pizza & Subs) in Dillon after the ride.  It should be another sunny day with temperature around 55 at 11am.  I call that shorts weather.

Hope to see you there.

Road Bike Ride October 5

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week we will meet at Whole Foods (back East corner of lot) at 10 a.m.  From Here we will ride towards Breckenridge.  At Tiger Run RV park cross route 9 (be careful) and take Revette Drive.  This road goes past a number of condos and newer homes and ends on Tiger Road.  When you get to Tiger Road go Right and turn on Clubhouse Road (which goes to the Breckenridge Golf Center Clubhouse).  Go Right on Highlands Drive and follow Highlands Drive through the Highlands.  Eventually you will arrive at Highlands Drive and Route Nine (across from Valley Brook Drive).  At this point cross Highway Nine and get on the recpath to return to Frisco.  When we return to Frisco I suggest we have lunch at Whole Foods as a way of saying good bye to the long riding season.  I suspect this will be our last ride, although if the weather holds out who knows.

Ride Safe!

September 28 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Reports of my disappearance were premature.  Next week we will meet at the Dillon amphitheater parking at 9:30 ready to ride to Montezuma.  This is a change from the posted ride so we can enjoy the fall colors.  We will not have a grill but plan to bring your own lunch and socialize afterwards.

Ride Safe,

Monday Ride 9/14 - Frisco (10am) to Vail Pass w/Lunch

This Monday’s ride will be from Frisco up the bike path to Copper and Vail Pass.  Meet at the 2nd Frisco exit parking lot and be ready to ride at 10am.  This is a later than normal start time because of the chilly mornings and lack of sun on bike path near Officers Gulch.

We’ll cruise up the bike path to Copper and them up to Vail Pass and over to Black Lakes.  I figured we should get another one of these rides in before it started snowing.

Lunch is going to be out in front of Whole Foods in Frisco. I plan be to there around 12:30.  No potluck, just bring lunch or buy something scrumptious at Whole Foods.

Hope to see you there.  Call or email if you have any questions or concerns.

Fwd: [summitbiking] Monday Bike Ride - August 31

Our Monday 8/31 scheduled ride will start at the parking lot on the west end of Main Street in Frisco. The parking lot is across the street from the Kayak store. Be ready to ride at 9:30 AM. The primary ride option will be to go around the Lake in a clockwise direction with the option on the return leg of passing the parking lot and continuing up Ten Mile  Canyon to Officer's Gulch or beyond. We will have lunch at my house, 102 A Riverside Place, just behind the  post office in Frisco - I will supply more detailed directions as to how to get to my house and where to park on the morning of the ride. There will be a grill. Bring something to eat and something to share. Our goal will be to back at my house by 12noon.

Monday (8/24) Ride - Georgetown (10am) to Loveland Ski Area (NO POTLUCK)

Monday’s ride leaves Georgetown at 10am and heads UP the bike path to Silver Plume, then UP the service road to Bakerville, then UP the bike path to Loveland Ski area.  With all that UP this means the ride back to Georgetown must be a screaming easy DOWNHILL.  This weekend I will drive the road up to Guanella Pass to see if is rideable.

If you don’t want all that uphill then you can always head down to Idaho Springs and ride back.

Park along the road just past the visitors center in Georgetown (right off the freeway exit).  There are restrooms at the visitor center but they don’t want us parking in their lot.  I’m giving Bonnie the day off so there won’t be a grill.  I hear that there are picnic tables at the visitors center so bring a lunch if you have time to chat with your fellow bikers.  Another option is to enjoy one of the many restaurants in Georgetown if you feel like dropping some spendolas in this tourist town.

Winter is just around the corner, hope to see many of you there.

Call or email me if you have questions.

August 17 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

It is that time of year when Bob Gilson asks if we would like to do an ice cream picnic at his place.  I noticed last year that we made a serious dent in his ice cream supplies so I said yes before Bob could change his mind.

The ride August 17 is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points; North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:30 am (A group of riders -- faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass road at 9:30 am (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9).  I plan to leave from Silverthorne, so if I am not at the bottom of Ute Pass at that start go without me.

The reward for the trip will be home made ice cream made by Bob and Jay Gilson. They will have a propane grill available for those who want to cook. As usual, bring something to eat and something to share with your friends as well as your drink. As a special treat, Bob intends to make some ice cream which will go as far as it goes, since he never knows how many people will be there.

Below are the details from Bob:

I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 8/17. I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there. The picnic will be on our deck and in the house, so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch, since we don't really have a lawn, and the view is prettier from the deck anyway. We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. The deck rail is 2x8 flat, so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.

From the Silverthorne Elementary School, which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride 1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Road, then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail. We're the 4th house on the left and the address is: 0137 Crescent Moon Trail. For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.

We give extra points for those who ride up to the house, but if you're driving, we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac; plus you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past. About 6 can park in our driveway, but you'll have to back down to get out. If you're concerned, just carpool up from the elementary school. Or... this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play.

Bob' home phone is: 262-6123 if any questions or problems. His cell phone is: (405) 210-6222 if you're calling while we are on the ride.

Bike Ride August 10

Hello Summit Bikers,

Since we postponed the yearly meeting this week we will try again next Monday.  We will leave from the Dillon amphitheater parking lot at 9:30.  The scheduled ride will be through Frisco and up to Copper.  The goal is to be back to the amphitheater by 11:30 for the meeting.  There will be no grill nor picnic but riders are invited to bring lunch and a drink to have during the meeting.  We will have two guests: Jeff Westcott (from Mavick Sport) will  present an update on this year's CTS Ride and Brian Lorch (Director of the Summit County Open Space and Trails) will be present to discuss Rec Path issues and upcoming projects.

All Summit Bikers are encouraged to sign up to either ride or volunteer for Circle the Summit (held August 16 this year).  The email for the coordinator of the volunteers is Jim@mavsports.com.  Information about the ride can be found at www.circlethesummit.com.

Anyone who did not read Dick Bryant's recent email on older riders (even if you are not there yet, one day you will be) should check it out at velonews.competitor.com/cycling-extremes.  (cut and paste in browser)

Bike Ride and Annual Meeting August 3

Next week we will have our annual meeting, at Dillon Amphitheater, thus our ride will be slightly shorter so we are all back by 11:30.  Plan to meet at the amphitheater parking lot at 9:30 ready to ride.  Your choice will be a ride around the lake, going clockwise, or a ride through Frisco to Officers Gulch.  Depending on your speed you may have to add some additional riding or turn around early.  We will not have a picnic but feel free to bring something to snack on during the meeting.

Use extra caution when riding, as lots of tourist are in town.  Ride safe and have fun!

Fw: Lodging Help For USA Pro Rider

This rider needs a place to stay if someone has a spot available.  A chance to help an up and coming rider and perhaps get some good biking tips.

John Bowyer

Read the bottom first.    Johnathan needs a place to stay from July 24 - Aug 14. We can do a few days but are gone & can't do the whole time. Would you be willing to put something on Summit biking to see if we can find a place up here for him to stay. He is 23 years old & very nice & polite. No feed needs to be provided but he would appreciate a home cooked meal occasionally.

Sara,

Johnathan is looking for a (complimentary) place to stay in Summit County from July 25th until the rest of his team arrives for the USA Pro Challenge.

Right now he is staying in Evergreen with a professor and his family but there is more family coming there and he needs to find another place to stay where he can get high altitude training in as preparation for the race.

Please pass this around to all your cycling friends in Summit. Hopefully, someone will be able to help out an aspiring young pro racer on the Jelly Belly Cycling Team.

I have known Johnathan since he was five years old and can vouch for him.  Thanks for your help.

July 20 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride, July 20, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville.  This is beautiful ride with great views of the lake and the mountains around it.  Please be ready to ride at 10 am.  We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area.  To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville.  As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right at a stop light.  Take a right at the stop light (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course.  As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake.  Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left.  (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.)  There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards.  Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area.  Please bring a pen to complete the envelope.  If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area).  To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the right just before the dam.  To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes.

I normally ride counter clockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems.  Since this is a circle those that want a shorter ride should plan to turn around.  Remember this is on a rode so stay to the right and watch out for pot holes.

We are giving Bonnie (meaning no grill) the day off , but have the picnic supplies available, so plan to bring something to eat for lunch as well as something to share with your friends and a drink.

Those that would like to car pool are encouraged to meet at the west end of Frisco in the parking lot at 8:45.  If the chance of rain in the morning is over 50 percent an email will be sent out Sunday night.

Since we have so many new people this year I thought I should give everyone some of the basic stuff.  If it is raining when the ride is to start there will be no ride.  I do look at the forecast and will send out an email the night before, especially if we are going out of the county.  Rides out of the county start at 10 am, all others are at 9:30.  All riders are required to use helmets.

Ride safe and have fun!

Friday Morning Ride Around The Lake (9:30 at the Dam)

Meet me at the East end of the dam at the benches 9:30 Friday Morning and we’ll go for a ride.  I plan to step it up a notch and head up to Montezuma.  I understand that the road is in bad condition around Peru Creek so we only may make it that far.  On the way back we may head around the lake or go straight back to the Dillon for some market food.

This weekend Team Evergreen’s Triple ByPass Ride will be coming through the county on Saturday & Sunday.  Safe travels to those who are doing the ride.

July 13 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride is either to Copper or Vail Pass starting at the Frisco Marina at 9:30.  A picnic will follow at the Marina around noon.  We will not have a grill but bring something to eat and share with your friends, as well as a drink.  Folding chairs are also good, although the grass (the non smoking kind) is good.

Be sure to use hand signals, and keep others informed when passing.  Even the best riders can go down as happened today on the Tour de France, so always stay alert.

Summit Biking - Monday Morning Ride (7/6 @ 9:30)

Since there is nothing else on the schedule, I have decided to lead a Green Mountain Reservoir ride Monday morning.  Many of us were out of town when this was on the schedule earlier this season.  John indicated there was a great turnout so we’re going to try it again.

The ride starts at 9:30 from the usual parking lot on the right hand side of the turnoff to Heeney.  It is only 11+ miles down to the dam and around the corner over to Rt9 9 so this will be a 22+ miles ride.  We’ll plan to meet back at the North Pond picnic area (just South of Elementary school) a little after noon for lunch.  Bring a sandwich and/or something to share.  We’re giving Bonnie the day off so I’m picking up the picnic supplies from her but don’t count on there being a grill fired up for your burgers.

Call me or email if you have questions.

June 29 Bike Ride Change -- PLEASE READ

Hello Summit Bikers,

The parking lot at the amphitheater is still being used for landscaping so we need to start Monday's ride elsewhere.  Plan to meet across from the Lake Dillon Theater at 9:30 ready to ride.  To get there go South on Route 6 toward Dillon (from I 70) and turn right at the stoplight for Dillon.  The theater is on your right and there is a parking lot across.  There are no restroom facilities so if you need to stop do so at the end of your ride at the amphitheater restrooms.  We will still have a grill and picnic tables about 25 feet from the parking lot.  The route will be the same as previously posted.  This was a new route created last year so be sure to take a look at it and perhaps print it if you are not familiar.  Sorry for the last minute change.

there – donuts, corndogs, chocolate chip cookies, waffles, crepes, etc.

June 29 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next week we will meet at 9:30 ready to ride, in the amphitheater parking lot in Dillon.  The ride will be a choice of down the trail all the way through Keystone to the River Run area or ride on route 6, if you prefer.  Note the path does make a right turn over the Snake River just before Keystone Lake area. Once you reach River Run (some may want to ride toward Montezuma for a couple of miles) you can return on the road which goes through the Mountain House area and pass the stables.  Continue on to the Old Ranch House Road in Keystone.  The road to the ranch house is the one that goes straight where most of us walk our bikes through the gate (River Golf Course).  The road has some rolling hills and turns left just before you get to the Ranch Restaurant.  If you get to the restaurant you missed the turn by 100 yards.  When you get to a gate and dirt road, turn around and return to the amphitheater for a picnic.  We will have a grill available so plan to bring what you would like to grill, a dish to share and your drink.  Plan to be back at the for the picnic around noon.

Use caution if you ride the path through Keystone as many tourist are here, however riding along the Snake River is beautiful.  Space between riders along with verbal communication and hand signals reduces the risk of accidents.  Never pass a rider to the right unless you are sure they are aware you are doing that.

I plan to be out of the county August 24 through September 22, so if anyone wants to step up and organize the group doing that time contact me at bikebreck@yahoo.com.

Ride safe and have fun!

June 22 Bike Ride

Next weeks ride is a change from the posted schedule.  We will start at the south end of the Breckenridge Recreational Center, near the ball fields at 9:30 am ready to ride.  There are two options, either riding to Frisco on to Dillon and over Swan Mountain or the same ride turning around at the amphitheater in Dillon.  There will be a grill so plan to bring what you would like to cook, as well as something to share with your friends and a drink.

Hope to see everyone there.

June 15 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

As work continues in Dillon near the amphitheater we will once again venture outside Summit County to East Vail.  The ride will be from Big horn Park, starting at 10 am.  There will be a grill available so plan to bring something to cook, a drink and a dish to share with your friends. For those who would like to car pool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am.  Carpools are recommended.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Gore Trail trough Vail and onto Minturn or Edwards.  The picnic will start around noon.

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.

Remember the tourist are in town (West Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners.  Use hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.

For those that asked Brad has moved from Team Managers, which is closed, to a new location in Frisco.  He is located in the alley not far from the Cum and Go at 211 Main Street unit 5A.  Phone number is 303 588-3338.

June 8 Ride (First Picnic of the Year)

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir.  Afterwords, we will have a picnic at North Pond in Silverthorne. North Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Road and Route 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and something to grill as we will have a grill.

This is a fun ride to bring a guest along since it is an out and back and difficult to get lost on.

Ride safe and have fun!

Save the Date!

The US Pro Challenge is hosting a Community Ride in Breckenridge Sunday morning June 21st (Father's Day). The ride starter and leader will be Timmy Duggan, retired pro cyclist. Stage 4 from Aspen will finish in Breckenridge on Thursday, August 20 and the Individual Time Trial will be held in Breckenridge the following day. The US Pro Challenge will have two VIP passes for the Breckenridge stages to give away before the Community Ride start.

Two routes will be offered for the ride, with additional options for each; including a route up the now infamous Moonstone Rd climb that has featured prominently in the Breckenridge stage finishes the last two years and will be featured again this year in both the Stage 4 finish and the Stage 5 Individual time trial.

The ride will start at 9am from the Breck Bike Guides shop at 411 S Main St #12 in Breckenridge.

Come early to meet Timmy and others, and to register for the VIP Pass drawing.

June 1 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Monday was a great day to start the season on, with no rain for a change.  Next week we are going to try a new route for us, starting at Minturn.  After this we will be back on the schedule posted at www.Summitbiking.org. To get to the start got west to exit 171.  Take the exit off to the right, turning right onto route 24 towards Minturn.   Turn right into National Forest Center and park on the left close to route 24. Figure 45 minutes drive from Frisco.  Plan to be ready to ride by 10 am.

There will be two routes, either turning right on route 24 and riding through Minturn and up Black Mountain or turning left and going under Interstate 70 and towards Edwards.  The route up Black Mountain has a lot of uphill, riding on the shoulder.  The route towards Edwards is a combination bike path and shoulder.

I am not sure about picnic facilities so it is best for those wanting to socialize afterwards to bring their own lunch and lawn chairs.  Plan to be back at the start around 12:30.

Stay to the right and use hand signals to communicate.

Ride Safe,

John Bowyer

May 25 Ride Change

Hello Summit Bikers,

After hearing from several of you concerning the flooding at Bear Creek Park, I contacted the park and found out the water is still rising.  In the park many areas are closed and the bike path has several inches of water on the south side and totally impassable on the north side.  Based on this I have decided to rethink our initial ride and change it to Idaho Springs riding to Georgetown.  Plan to meet at the parking lot behind the Buffalo Restaurant & Bar at 10 am ready to go.  We plan to have lunch at the Buffalo Restaurant following the ride for those that would like to join us.  (estimated around 12:30 pm).

To get to the start point head East on Route 70 and get off on exit 239.  Turn left and continue on Colorado Boulevard to 16th Ave and turn right.  Two blocks down are some large parking lot (close to I70).  Turn into the lot on the left.

Hopefully, the rain will hold off for us and things will get better for biking.

May 25 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

I realize that looking out the window it is hard to believe but bike season is here.  It is time to take the bikes out, oil things make sure all is working as well as find those bike clothes.  This season`s first ride will be held Monday May 25 starting west of the 470 loop near Bear Creek Lake Park at the Morrison exit. There will be no picnic this week. Those wanting to stay for lunch can join me at the Blue Cow in Morrison. They are located at 316 Bear Creek Avenue and according to their web site has plenty of parking.

Directions to Ride

To get to the start of the ride go east on 70 toward Denver and get off on 470 south. Take 470 to the Morrison exit and turn right. The parking lot is on the right at the corner of S. Rooney Road and Morrison Road. If you are late, the bike path is across Morrison Road from the parking area, then ride east under 470. The drive from exit 205 (Silverthorne) to the start is approximately 1 hour. Plan to be ready to ride by 10 am. If it appears likely that it will rain during the ride I will send an email out the afternoon before canceling.

There will be two routes to choose from; a loop up route 74 to Evergreen (see below for specific directions) or ride Bear Creek Trail to the Platte River. Both of these are about 2 hours.

Route 74 Ride Directions

This season`s rides are on the website SummitBiking.org.  There is a lot of other useful information on the site such as safety tips and where Summit Bikers can get discounts at local bike shops.  Members without a life time membership should use the website and join for the 2014 bike season. This is also a great time to tell others about our rides, since most Summit Country people are very active.

Road Ride Around The Lake Today

Is anybody interested in riding around the lake this afternoon.  If so meet me at the East end of the dam at 12:30.  This is the Dillon end where the path comes up from Silverthorne.  We may go around the lake or divert up to Keystone, Montezuma or extend over to Breckenridge.  In any case it will be sunny, cool and downhill both ways.
