September 22nd ride

Hi All,
The last scheduled Monday ride for this season is on September 22rd. Let' meet at the Dillon Amphitheater lot at 9:30. We can make a group decision as to where we would like to ride. As of this moment the temperature ought to be 54F at ride time with a 22% chance of precipitation. The likelihood of rain increases later in the morning. How about we break with tradition and gather for lunch at the Jersey Boys Restaurant in Dillon after the ride. If there are too many of us we can chose some other place that can accommodate a larger group.
See you all on Monday.

August 25 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

For those that did not go to Georgetown they found a way to make the ride up Guanella Pass tougher by chip sealing the road.

Next weeks ride is to Montezuma or Loveland Pass.  Since we are unable to ride all the way to Montezuma the plan is to ride up as far as we can and then ride to the Old Ranch House in Keystone and return.  Those riding to either A-Basin or Loveland Pass please use caution as all hazmat trucks use Loveland Pass as well as many visitors.

Meet at the Dillon Amphitheater at 9:30 am ready to ride.  We will have a grill so bring something to cook and share with your friends.  As always bring your own drink.  We should have the grill started around 11:30 with most of us back between then and noon.

Remember to use hand signals and ride safe.

In case of emergency my cell number is 970 393-2190.

August 18 Ride

Next weeks ride has several options, including Guanella Pass, Loveland Ski Area or Idaho Springs.  Be ready to ride at 10 am from next to the Georgetown Visitor Center along Argentine Road (take exit 228 off I 70).  Parking is available along Argentine Road and the visitor center asked us not to take up all their parking.  Since there are no grills bring a sandwich and a drink for after the ride during our social hour following the ride as well as a dish to share with your friends (a bag of potato chips does not count as a dish).  The picnic will start around 12:15, although the Guanella Pass riders may need more time.

See you next week.  Ride Safe!

August 11 Bike Ride and Yearly Meeting

Hello Summit Bikers,

It was fortunate we rode this morning so we missed the down pour.

Next week we will meet at 9:30 ready to ride, at the amphitheater in Dillon.  The ride will be either down the trail all the way through Keystone to the River Run area or on route 6, if you prefer. Once in River Run return on the road which goes through the Mountain House area and pass the stables.  Continue on to the Old Ranch House in Keystone.  The road to the ranch house is the one that goes straight where most of us walk our bikes through the fence (River Golf Course).  The road has some rolling hills and turns left just before you get to the Ranch Restaurant.  If you get to the restaurant you missed the turn by 100 yards.  When you get to a gate and dirt road, return to the amphitheater for a picnic and the yearly meeting.  We will have a grill available so plan to bring what you would like to grill, a dish to share and your drink.  The picnic starts around 11:30 with the yearly meeting following around noon.  Both will be held at the pavilion (where we normally have the picnic).

Use caution if you ride the path through Keystone as many tourist are still around, however riding along the Snake River is beautiful.  Space between riders along with verbal communication and hand signals reduces the risk of accidents.

Ride safe and have fun!

August 4 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Judging by the feedback, it sounds like we can add a new route through Silverthorne.  With almost 2,000 feet of gain it will not be an early season ride.

Next week we will once again venture outside Summit County to East Vail and either do Vail Pass or Vail Trail.  The ride will be from Big horn Park in East Vail, starting at 10 am.  There will be a grill available (sorry about the lack of a grill last week) so plan to bring something to cook, a drink and a dish to share with your friends. For those who would like to car pool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 9 am.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Vail Trail trough Vail and on to Minturn.  The picnic will start around noon.

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.

Remember the tourist are in town (West Vail also gets many downhill riders), slow down and do not cut corners.  Use those hand signals and let others verbally know where you are.

Our Circle the Summit Ride is coming up August 16 and riders are encouraged to participate and get the word out to others.

Ride safe and have fun!

July 28 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Since I have had several questions regarding next weeks ride I am putting out a short clarification.  The ride goes from and returns to the amphitheater parking lot (starting at 9:30 am.)  The main ride has a lot of climbing but most riders should be able to complete in 2 to 2.5 hours.  For those that do not want to do all the climbing I suggest riding to the end of the Silverthorne Recpath near North Pond, reversing the path back to the dam and riding to Frisco and returning for the picnic around 11:45 am.  Hope to see you Monday.

July 28 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers;

Below is a new route through Silverthorne designed to show off the ride down the dam, the new recpath and several neighborhoods.  There may seem to be too many turns but most of them are easy to follow once you riding the route. The recpath does go by the outlets (watch for walkers) and the route does cross Route 9 twice so caution is advised. Please print this out and have for the ride. If lost ride downhill as the recpath is along the Blue River.

Dillon Amphitheater – Start
Go toward the dam
Rt on Silverthorne path
to N. Pond
Rt End of Path (Allegra Dr)
Rt at stop sign (Hamilton Cr Rd)
Ride to top and turn
Lt on Lakeview Circle
Complete Lakeview Circle turn
Lt at bottom of Circle
(continuation of Hamilton Cr Road)
Rt on Bald Eagle
Cross Rt 9 to Golden Eagle
Lt on Falcon Dr.
Lt on Golden Eagle
Lt on Two Cabins
Rt on Arnica Ln
Lt on Currant Way (easy to miss)
Lt on Hunters Knob Rd
Rt Game Trail Rd
Rt on Rt 9
Lt at N. Pond
Rt on Allegra Dr.
Lt on Recpath
Return to Start
Picnic start 11:45 or so

An alternative route is to ride down the Dam and through Silverthorne to North Pond (end of the recpath) and return, riding the dam to Frisco and returning around 11:45.

If there is an emergency my cell number is 970 393-2190.

Margaret and I will be gone from the end of August through the rest of the biking season.  If you plan to be around and are willing to lead this bunch on Monday rides let me know.

Ride Safe and have fun!

July 21 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

It is that time of year when Bob Gilson asks if we would like to do an ice cream picnic at his place.  I noticed last year that we made a serious dent in his ice cream supplies so I said yes before Bob could change his mind.

The ride July 21 is to Ute Pass. There will be two starting points; North Pond in Silverthorne starting at 8:30 am (A group riders -- faster group perhaps with pace line) or from the bottom of Ute Pass road at 9:30 am (where Ute Pass intersects Route 9).  I plan to leave from Silverthorne, so if I am not at the bottom of Ute Pass at that start go without me.

The reward for the trip will be a picnic hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne. They will have a propane grill available for those who want to cook. As usual, bring something to eat and something to share with your friends as well as your drink. As a special treat, Bob intends to make some ice cream which will go as far as it goes, since he never knows how many people will be there.

Below are the details from Bob:

I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 7/21. I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there. The picnic will be on our deck and in the house, so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch, since we don't really have a lawn, and the view is prettier from the deck anyway. We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. The deck rail is 2x8 flat, so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.

From the Silverthorne Elementary School, which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride 1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Road, then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail. We're the 4th house on the left and the address is: 0137 Crescent Moon Trail. For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.

We give extra points for those who ride up to the house, but if you're driving, we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac; plus you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past. About 6 can park in our driveway, but you'll have to back down to get out. If you're concerned, just carpool up from the elementary school. Or... this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play.

Bob' home phone is: 262-6123 if any questions or problems. His cell phone is: (405) 210-6222 if you're calling while we are on the ride.

Ride safe

Next weeks ride, July 14, takes us out of the county to Turquoise Lake near Leadville.  This is beautiful ride with great views of the lake and the mountains around it.  Please be ready to ride at 10 am.  We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area.  To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville.  As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right and a stop light.  Take a right at the stop light (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course.  As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquoise Lake.  Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left.  (If you reach the dam you have driven past the turn.)  There is a small fee, reduced for those with Access Cards.  Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area.  Please bring a pen to complete the envelope.  If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area).  To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the right just before the dam.  To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes.

I normally ride counter clockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems.  Since this is a circle those that want  a shorter ride should plan to turn around.

We will have a grill at the picnic area so plan to bring something to cook for lunch as well as something to share with your friends and a drink.

I encourage everyone to wear their Summit Biking shirts to the dedication and lunch.  It will show the county we support the bike paths.  In addition, we are working with Whole Foods to support the CTS ride this year.

Bikers are cautioned to be very careful when riding over the bridges on Vail Pass as the new boards have warped and caused several accidents.

Hello Summit Bikers:

Sorry about leaving the charcoal behind last week.  It was not Bonnie's doing.

Next weeks ride is the yearly technical talk by Team Managers.  Last year Stewart treated us to coffee and a number of goodies and I suspect will be generous again.  Plain to meet for a discussion starting around 8:40, with a ride to either Copper or Vail Pass to follow, starting at 9:30.  A picnic will follow at the Frisco Marina around noon.  We will not have a grill but bring something to eat and share with your friends, as well as a drink.  If you have technical questions you would like Brad to address send them to me at bikebreck@yahoo.com.

Roger Paluska (rcpalu@gmail.com) is looking for a few good people to assist as course marshals on this years Circle the Summit Ride, August 16.  He is willing to take the lame and not so good people as well, as long as you can give some instruction to riders.

Circle The Summit Registration is Open!

The 7th Annual Circle The Summit Bike Ride will be Saturday, August 16

Summer is cycling season in Colorado. The Circle the Summit Ride provides a great chance to experience some of the most glorious routes in our state – loved by both  amateur and professional riders.

Rider cap is set at a low of 750, so plenty of opportunity to ride at your own pace!  This late summer ride is a great chance to assess your season's fitness goals. Funds from this event will expand bike path maps and signage and develop more designated bicycle lanes in Summit County.

Once you have registered, invite your BFF's, riding buddies, kids, co-workers, in-laws and anyone else who loves to ride to join you on August 16!

June 9 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride will be from Idaho Springs to Georgetown and back. This was canceled last week but I thought we should reschedule before it was too hot.  Some riders may want to go on to either Silver Plume or Loveland Ski Area and return. We will meet at the Courtney Riley Cooper Park in Idaho Springs at 10 a.m. ready to ride.   To get to the park take exit 240 from I 70, turn left on 13 Ave (toward town).  At Colorado Boulevard go right.  The park is on the left next to the creek.  The drive takes about 45 minutes.  We will have a grill so bring something to cook and something to share with your friends.  As always bring what you would like to drink.

All of this is on county roads with some traffic but not much.  Riders are encouraged to use hand signals so others are aware of turns, stops and rode obstacles.

Get others to come along.  This is an active area and many of your neighbors may want to ride with a group.

In case of a breakdown on the day of the ride call my cell number is 970-393-2190.

June 2 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

Next weeks ride will be the Green Mountain Reservoir. The start of the ride is at the intersection of Route 9 and Heeney Road, approximately 20 miles north of Silverthorne. Plan to be ready to ride at 9:30 am. Most of the parking is on route 9 at the intersection with Heeney Road. Be careful crossing route 9 as it is a busy road. Heeney Road is not very busy but it is a road with some traffic and people are encouraged to ride single file near the shoulder. This is the only Summit County ride with rolling hills as you ride on the west side of the reservoir.  Afterwords, we will have a picnic at North Pond in Silverthorne. North Pond is across from the elementary school at the corner of Hamilton Creek Road and Route 9. Please bring something to share with your friends, whatever you want to drink and something to grill as we will have a grill.

Stephan Horlak and I checked out the ride today and as usual it has some potholes and one rough spot but overall it is in good shape. This is a fun ride to bring a guest along since it is an out and back and difficult to get lost on.

Ride safe and have fun!

May 26 Bike Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

It was great to see so many in Morrison for a wonderful day of biking.

Next weeks ride will be from Idaho Springs to Georgetown and back.

Riders are encouraged to use hand signals so others are aware of turns, stops and rode obstacles.

Get others to come along.  This is an active area and many of your neighbors may want to ride with a group.

In case of a breakdown on the day of the ride call my cell number is 970-393-2190.

Ride safe and have fun!

Bike Accident Fundraiser

Hello Summit Bikers,

Sharon Siler asked me to forward this fundraiser information concerning a serious biking accident last summer.  If you are around stop by or see the note about donations.

I know Trevor Giles, his wife Linda & son Garrett, a senior at Summit High. They really need our support. Last August Trevor, an experienced cyclist, rode over to Vail to watch the Colorado Pro race time trials. He remembers starting back to Summit but doesn't remember the fall. He was discovered by one of the photographers or race worker, off the path & partly in the creek. He suffered a severe injury to his spinal cord which has left him a quadriplegic. I visited him in early December & he has a great attitude but he hasn't been able to return to work-and won't be able to-so the challenges are almost overwhelming. Please forward this to your friends & join us at Pugs or send a donation.
Thank you,
Sharon Siler

Please take 5 minutes to read this note about Linda & Trevor Giles.
Linda's husband had a tragic bicycling accident on Vail Pass; it has left Trevor a quadriplegic. Although they had health insurance, maxed their HSA contributions, as well as saved for retirement responsibly, the overwhelming expenses incurred are drastically depleting their monies.
Our wonderful little community is hosting a fundraiser to help offset some of their expenses. We invite you to attend the fundraiser on Saturday, February 22nd at Pug Ryan's, from noon until 3pm. Pug Ryan's is donating ALL proceeds to the Giles family! There is also a bank account in the name of 'Trevor Giles' set up at Bank of the West for monetary donations.
The reason for my note is to request a Gift Certificate and/or new item for the fundraiser's silent auction.
A tragedy of this kind could happen to anyone in Summit County, as we are all a very active sort! One wonderful aspect of living in our small area is the sense of community we all embody. Please take a moment to help me raise money via the silent auction with any size Gift Certificate and/or new item donation.
Please call me and I will happily pick up whatever donation you may have. Thank you for your time and consideration!
