Turquoise Lake Ride August 1

Hello Summit Bikers,

This weeks ride takes us out of the county to Turquiose Lake near Leadville.  This is beautiful ride with great views of the lake and the mountains around it.  Please be ready to ride at 10 am.  We will meet at the Maid of Erin parking area.  To get there take route 91 at the Copper exit toward Leadville.  As you enter Leadville there will be a Safeway on your right and a stop light.  Take a right at the stop light (Mountain View Drive) and follow the signs toward the golf course.  As you near the golf course there are signs for Turquiose Lake.  Follow these until you reach road 9C, take a right here and the Maid of Erin Parking area is on the left.  (If you rech the dam you have driven past the turn.)  There is a $5 fee, reduced for those with Access Cards.  Fee envelopes are available as you enter the parking area.  Please bring a pen to complete the envelope.  If this area is full there is free parking near the dam (which is a short bike ride or walk back to the picnic area).  To reach the dam go out of the Maid of Erin parking area and take the first right, go past the road you drove in on and park on the right just before the dam.  To walk back to the picnic area after the ride follow the path along the lake, it takes about 5 minutes.

I checked out about half of this ride a week ago and  found only the normal problems of rough roads in sections and some traffic.  I normally ride counter clockwise, control my speed and look ahead for potential problems.  Since this is a circle those that want  a shorter ride should plan to turn around.

We will have a grill at the picnic area so plan to bring something to cook for lunch as well as something to share with your friends and a drink.

Since this out of the County we will start slightly latter.  Those that would like to car pool are encouraged to meet at the west end of Frisco in the parking lot at 8:45.

Hope to see everyone there.

Ride safe and have fun!

ice cream social lost and found

The only thing we had left over today (with the exception of some ice cream) was a gray with orange top Ride the Rockies water bottle.  I can bring it to the ride next week if you’d like, or you can pick it up anytime.

UTE PASS Ride July 18

Summit Bikers Ice Cream Social to Ute Pass ride - 2011

Next week's ride will be to Ute Pass, with a picnic afterward at the home of Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne.  We'll have a propane grill available for those who want to cook.  As usual, bring something to eat and something to share.  As last year, I'll make some ice cream which will go as far as it goes, since we never know how many people will be there.

For those who want to ride from Silverthorne, I'll see you at the elementary school at 8:30 for departure about 8:40 next Monday morning so we can ride up Highway 9 to Ute Pass Road for the ride.  If you plan to ride from the school, please email me so we know who'll be there.  My email is:  bob@aim-okc.com

Below are the details:

I plan to make some ice cream for the Ute Pass post-ride picnic at our house next Monday, 7/18.  I expect to have plenty, but you just never know who the professional ice cream eaters are out there.  The picnic will be on our deck and in the house, so please leave your bike shoes off at the porch, since we don't really have a lawn, and the view is prettier from the deck anyway. We have about 6-8 deck chairs and about the same inside. The deck rail is 2x8 flat, so it makes a good rest for a glass or dish.

Ice cream flavors we expect to have: [OK, I'll be deciding that as you read this email]

- Old Fashion Vanilla (not my Tour de French Vanilla, but very good, too)
some originals - new and old
- Tour de French Vanilla Mint Oreo Cookies and Cream
- Bob's Mocha
- " Banana Mocha
- Bob's Chocolate Pudding Fudge Brownie
- Raspberry sorbet

We do have a very friendly dog named "Kelly" (my wife, Jay, always says, "Her Mom was a German Shepherd and her Dad was a good dog, too.") who thinks anyone who comes over came just to see her. However, she does not get 'people food', so please don't offer her a tidbit or anything which might fall on the floor. The end result is that she doesn't beg for food - just ice cubes and attention. You'll see her hanging around the 'magic ice cube machine'
on the front of the refrigerator.  She's 14-1/2 now and declining slowly, but still enjoys company and is in no pain.

Directions to our house are very easy as follows:

From the Silverthorne Elementary School, which is on Hamilton Creek Road, drive/ride 1.3 miles up Hamilton Creek Road, then turn right onto Crescent Moon Trail. We're the 4th house on the left and the address is: 0137 Crescent Moon Trail.  For those of you who know Roger and Sue Paluska, they live in the first house on the left of the same road.

We give extra points for those who ride up to the house, but if you're driving, we have room for some 8-10 cars to park just beyond our driveway in a cul-de-sac; plus you can park along one side of the road to allow others from the few houses beyond us to get past.  About 6 can park in our driveway, but you'll have to back down to get out.  If you're concerned, just carpool up from the elementary school. Or... this is where the extra points for riding up the hill come into play.

Home phone is: 262-6123 if any questions or problems.  My cell phone is: (405) 210-6222 if you're calling when I'm on the bike.

Hello Summit Bikers,

Our first annual meeting was well attended.  Thanks to everyone that made it.

On Friday July 15 the Grand Opening of  the Swan Mountain Recpath takes place at 10 am at Sapphire Point.  Everyone in Summit Biking is invited.  You had a lot to do with the path being completed so we hope you can make it.  You can plan to meet the Dillon Amphitheatre parking lot at 9:15 ready to ride or plan to get up to Saphire Point by 10 am from another direction.  Since parking is limited please do not plan to drive, unless you must.  We will complete the loop around the lake after the celebration.

Next weeks ride (July 18) will be a return to Ute Pass (This is a schedule change from the calender.  Turquoise Lake has been moved to August 1.).  There are two choices for the start, either North Pond (8:30am) or at the base of Ute Pass (9:30am).  Riding from North Pond entails riding on the shoulder of route nine.  To get to North Pond take route nine through Silverthorne about 3 miles to the elementary school at the intersection of route nine and the elementary school.  If you plan to meet us at the base of  Ute Pass drive another 10 miles and turn at the intersection of Ute Pass Road and route nine.  Park at the base along the right side of Ute Pass Road.  Be careful riding this road as trucks use the road.

The reward for the trip will be a picnic hosted by Bob and Jay Gilson in Hamilton Creek, Silverthorne. They'll have a propane grill available for those who want to cook. As usual, bring something to eat and something to share with your friends as well as your drink. As a special treat, Bob intends to make some ice cream which will go as far as it goes, since we never know how many people will be there.

Summit Biking cornering clinic

Hi all,

At the general membership meeting yesterday, I had mentioned the great clinic that Sam Parker, co-owner of Podium Sports, had put on for the kids in our Youth Program.  Several of our members asked if we could put one on for the adults.  So:

I have arranged with Sam to put on another Cornering Clinic on Thursday July 21st.  It can only accommodate 20 people but if we have a large response, Sam says he will put on a 2nd clinic for us at a later date.

By the way, Sam was a trainer at the Carpenter/Phinney bike camps for years.

So, I am putting this out to the members of Summit Biking who are interested in an excellent Clinic, to learn the dynamics of cornering properly.  Only the 1st 20 people that respond to me will be admitted to this 1st Clinic.

DO NOT REPLY TO THIS SUMMIT BIKING POST.  All responses must be sent to:

Faucettdds@Comcast.net

I will take the first 20 that respond and keep a wait list for any others that also want to take the Clinic.  I apologize in advance for those that don't see this in time and the 1st Clinic is closed when you respond.

Details:

Date:   July 21st

Time:   Ready to ride at 9.30am

Location:   High School parking lot - south side

Again, do not reply to this Post, only to the above e-mail address.

July 11 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

This week we are having the meeting of the Summit Bikers along with our weekly Monday ride.  The ride will be held at the Senior Center starting at 9:30 am.  Please be ready to ride on time.  The official ride is around the lake, although some may want to ride to Dillon and back.  The final path on the high school side of Sapphire Point is not completed and there is a place where heavy equipment uses the path (about a half mile past where the path crosses Swan Mountain Road on the Keystone side).  I road the path in both directions last weekend and enjoyed both of them.  Going counter clock wise the climbing lane is larger, and going clock wise you have the rec path most of the way, except for the down hill portion to the high school where you are riding with traffic.  As Norm pointed out earlier in an email the new pavement is very nice.

Plan to be back at the Senior Center by 11:30 for the start of the meeting.  This will be an important meeting for everyone to learn what the club has been doing and new things on the agenda.  Bring your own sandwich and something to drink so you can have lunch during the meeting.  Do not bring something to share this time as we are not prepared to handle this.

If by chance we have bad weather on Monday the meeting will still be held.

An emergency number if required during the ride is 970 333-1806. Do not leave messages but I will try to answer.

Summit Biking General Membership meeting July 11th, 2011

To all Summit Biking members,

Our Monday, July 11th, the ride will start and finish at the Senior Center at the County Commons.  Do not park in the Animal Shelter's lot.  There will be no regular lunch, so just bring along a sandwich and something to drink during the meeting.

Following the Monday Ride, at about 11.30am, we will go into the SR. Center for a membership meeting.  At that meeting, your Board of Directors will up-date you on the different Projects that Summit Biking is involved with and, more important, get 1) your feedback as to what you think of the past and present projects (now that the Swan Mountain extension is winding down) and 2) your opinion on where Summit Biking should want to spend our energy and money.

If you are not a member yet, now is is a good time to join.  You can join on line at www.summitbiking.org or pay Norm Stoller at any ride or at the membership meeting.

See you all Monday July 11th.  Have a great Fourth of July.

Bob Faucett

President, Summit Biking
