Bear Creek is a Go

Hello Summit Bikers,

After reviewing several weather forecasts for Lakewood tomorrow it appears we should be able to get the first ride of the season in before the rain starts so I hope you will join me at Bear Creek.

The ride will begin at 10 am from the Skunk Hollow picnic area in the park. Two rides are available either along Bear Creek to the Platte River or a loop up to Lookout Mountain and back. We will have a grill for those wanting to cook. Please bring something to share and of course whatever you want to drink.
Bear Creek Park is just over an hour drive from exit 205 on I 70. Go east on I 70 toward Denver .At 470 go south and take the Morrison Road exit on the right. At the stop light go left under 470.  Bear Creek Lake Park is on the right in about a 1 mile. There is a cost per car to enter the park, $4 for seniors, $5 for all others. Take the first right after the entrance and Skunk Hollow is on the right.

In our planning we missed the fact that next weekend is Memorial Day and we should not have included a ride.  The next ride will be June 6 and an email will go out as usual.

Hi everyone.

Our first ride of the season is just around the corner and it's time to get the bikes tuned and ready to go.

Before I start with this up-date of what Summit Biking has been up to, let me take a moment to express, from all of us, our condolences to Carol Pritchett over the loss of Bill.  He was a great friend and always a great help with Summit Biking.  Bill will be missed.  Don't miss Bill's Celebration of life on June 27th at the new Frisco Day Lodge, across from the Nordic Center.  This will take place after our Monday Ride.

Without too much detail, I'd like to bring you up to speed on a number of things your BOD has been up to.   If you don't have time to read this whole up-date, please just skip to #8 (the last paragraph) below-we need you help!!!!

1.       Vail Pass Tunnel Lighting:  We are in the process of putting lighting in the Vail Tunnel.  It should be completed around Memorial Day.  There have been several bad accidents as riders enter the dark tunnel and this will, hopefully, avoid any more of them.  The approximate $8,000 cost is from revenues from last year's Circle the Summit Ride.

2.       Swan Mountain Recpath Project:  As you have all seen in the SDN, construction of the final leg of the Swan Mountain Recpath will start soon.  The County is going to widen the section of road from the High School to the top at Sapphire Point, including a dedicated bike lane on the up-hill side of the road.  This will complete the Swan Mountain Recpath project that so many of us have contributed long hours to as well as many dollars.  Everyone involved with Summit Biking can and should be very proud when we ride from Summit Cove to the High School on this great new Recpath, completing the "Circle" around the reservoir.  Somewhere, Bob Guthrie is smiling.

3.       Circle the Summit Ride(CTS):  This year's edition of the Circle the Summit/Bob Guthrie Memorial Ride Co-chaired by Bob Chebul and Erin Kneedler-Jones is August 20th.  Again this year, it will start and finish on 3rd St, Frisco, between Main and Granite.  As always, volunteers are needed to make this event as successful as it has been the last few years.  For information on the Ride, go to www.Circlethesummit.com.  If you plan to volunteer this year (and we can't run the event without you), please contact your committee chair person, if you know who that is, or contact Bonnie Guthrie at bonniesaunders1@Yahoo.com.

4.       U S Pro Cycling Challenge:  A week after our Circle the Summit Ride, on Saturday, August 27th, Breckenridge (all of Summit County, for that matter) is hosting the 6th Day of the US Pro Cycling Challenge.  This will take a lot of manpower and volunteers are needed and welcome.  Rick Oshlo is Chairman of the Volunteer Committee for this day of the weeklong Event.  While our Circle the Summit Ride is Summit Biking's main fund raiser and priority, if you have time to volunteer two weeks in a row, please sign up at: www.usaprocyclingchallenge.com.

5.       Monday Rides:  John Bowyer is heading up all the Monday Rides this year.  You can find the proposed bike routes for each Monday at www.Summitbiking.org.

We will be announcing a slightly different format for the Monday Rides, so stay tuned.  For now, we want everyone that shows up on a Monday to know they can find a group to ride with and that there will be a designated leader of those that want to ride with a specific group.  Think in terms of skiing with the over the Hill Gangs.  More on that later.

6.       Youth Program:  The BOD is very excited about this Project.  New this year, the BOD of Summit Biking is making a commitment to get more young people off their butts and on road bikes.  To this end, we have partnered with Podium Sports, a young elementary school teacher by the name of Peder Hanson, and parents of interested young people, to put together the Summit Biking Youth Development Program (SBYDP).  You'll be hearing a lot more about this in the near future.

Deb Nelson is acting as chairman of this project and through her efforts, we are hoping for a great youth program similar to what Jeff Westcott (Maverick Sports) has done with the youth of Summit County through his Mountain Biking Junior League.  Jeff is working with Deb to help us get this Program for road biking off the ground.

In essence, we will be organizing 6 to 10 group rides, probably on Sunday mornings and Tuesdays, also in the morning, which will consist of a short educational program on biking, followed by an hour-long ride for various abilities.  There will be no races this year, but that is in the plans for next year.

We will be needing volunteers to help lead some of the rides and work with the kids.  When the final schedule is out, and if you would like to join us on this fun and worthwhile event,  please contact Deb or Peder at  "Summitroadies@gmail.com."

7.       Webmaster:  A very big "Thank you" to Rick Oshlo for his continued work keeping our great Web Site up to date and running.  He has done a terrific job.  There is a lot of information on the site-everything from all the usual bike routes around Summit County that you can direct visitors to, to a link to PayPal where you can renew your membership.  Visit it at www.Summitbiking.org.

8.       FINALLY:  Summit Biking can only continue with the support of all of its members.  It is time to go to our Web site at www.Summitbiking.org and renew your membership for this year, unless you have already joined as a life member.  Also, the Circle the Summit Ride needs new blood.  All the chair people are getting very tired.  The Circle the Summit Ride is our only fundraiser and if it ends due to a lack people stepping forward to help run it, then we will have developed and lost a great event.  Please consider stepping forward to take over for the chairmen you may have worked with during the Ride these last three years.  We need new blood!!!

First Ride of 2011

Hello Summit Bikers,

If you have not done it yet it is time to take the bike down and make sure everything is in working order.

The first ride of the season will be held Monday, May  23 at Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood just off route 470. Plan to stay after and enjoy some sun by the lake.  If there is a high risk of rain an email will be sent out Sunday afternoon canceling this ride.  We do not want to have people drive an hour for a rain out.

Bear Creek Park is just over an hour drive from exit 205 on I 70. Go east on I 70 toward Denver . At 470 go south and take the Morrison Road exit on the right. At the stop light go left under 470. Bear Creek Lake Park is on the right in about a 1 mile. There is a cost per car to enter the park, $4 for seniors, $5 for all others. Take the first right after the entrance and Skunk Hollow is on the right.

Swan Mtn Road work update

Swan Mountain Road will be closed to all traffic starting Tuesday, May 17 through Friday, May 20. The contractor (Columbine Hills Concrete) is scheduled to start pouring the concrete curb and gutter from the Sapphire Point parking area, working down the hill. Work will continue on this approximate 2,000 ft section until completed, at which time the road will re-open to one-lane traffic. This is the first of multiple full closures, and I will keep all posted on the schedule for the next one.

Also, please use extreme caution if riding Swan Mtn Road during construction.

For additional information, feel free to contact me.

Thanks.

Frontier Eliminates Bike Fees!

Frontier Airlines announced last week that they have eliminated their $50 checked bike fee for tickets purchased on or after April 13. Let's hope Southwest and others follow their lead.

Here's the excerpt from their announcement:

Bicycles:
Frontier is removing the flat fee for checked bicycles and will now include them in the standard baggage allowance, meaning customers traveling on Classis or Classic Plus fares can include their bike as one of their two complimentary checked bags and Economy passengers would pay $20 if the bike is one of their first two checked bags. Bikes will be exempt from any oversize fees, but subject to overweight fees and excess bag fees, if applicable. This is similar to the carrier's current policy for golf clubs and skis.

State Highway 91 2011 construction

The Colorado Department of Transportation will be re-paving the section of State Highway 91 from Copper Mtn to Leadville this summer. As part of this project they will be adding additional shoulder width to make the road safer for cycling traffic. The project is scheduled to start beginning of June, and will continue throughout the summer, and most likely part of spring/summer of 2012. Work days and hours will be Monday thru Thursday, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Fridays 6:00 am to 12:00 noon. There will be no work on weekends and holidays. Cycle traffic is not recommended during these construction times, but is not prohibited. There will be delays up to 20 minutes, with only one lane open during majority of construction. Also, please be aware that even during non-construction times the condition of the road surface might be in a state of disrepair.

More information will be posted as details are developed and finalized.

Fwd: Take that, Colorado

This is from John Karras, one of the Founders of Ragbrai in Iowa, and worthy to be passed on.  Go to Iowa to climb mountains?????

Bob;

If you think this might give a few folks a chuckle, please forward it to Summit Biking members.

Friends:

The following is from an Iowa friend quoting a paragraph from an Adventure Cycling publication called bikebits:

BIKE THE ROCKIES... IN IOWA!

Here's another one from Biking Bits, this one perhaps even more surprising than the National Park Service reaching out to cyclists: This summer's seven-day Register's Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) has a nearly identical amount of climbing as this summer's six-day Denver Post Ride the Rockies--both coming in at more than 21,000 feet of elevation gain!

And they say Iowa is flat.

Biking and Politics

Summit Biking has recently joined Bicycle Colorado.  "Bicycle Colorado's mission
is to encourage and promote bicycling, increase safety, improve conditions and
provide a voice for cyclists in Colorado. Established in 1992, BC is a
non-profit 501(c)3 organization working for you, the road, mountain and touring
cyclist in Colorado. " To achieve these goals they work closely with bike
groups,  bike companies and others state wide organizations that have an
interest in making Colorado a better place to ride.  They have been instrumental
in getting a number of laws changed, such as requiring motorists to give a three
foot buffer when passing and are currently involved with open roads legislation
(Pl 1093) to require all public roads be open to bikers or alternatives be
provided.

Recently a bicycle summit was held in downtown Denver and at the Capital
building where hundreds of people where brought together statewide to discuss
issues.  Since Summit Biking paid for a board member to attend this report is
being made to the members.  The meeting was a two day affair with the first day
discussing biking in Colorado and the US and the second day on meeting with
state representatives to influence voting on bicycle issues.

The two important pieces of legislation with impacts on biking this time is a
mountain bike law to limit liability to land owners that open their land to
public access.  Basically this allows mountain bikers to pass through private
land where the land owner have given permission without the land owner being
required to carry liability insurance.  This was a senate bill and did not make
it out of committee, losing by one vote.  Our representative is Jeanne
Nicholson, from Blackhawk, and she voted against the legislation.  It is
expected that this bill will come up again and hopefully enough changes will be
made so it is accepted.   Although I do not know all the issues with the bill it
seems there is a concern that passing it would limit liability to land owners
that build mountain park areas and then charge users.   Ms. Nicholson did say to
me she would switch her vote if land owners had insurance to cover liability
issues similar to what ski areas currently cover.  Her web site is
jeanne.nicholson.senate@state.co.us.  The other piece of legislation is to keep
all public roads open to the public (PL 1093) mentioned above.  Our
representative in the house committee involved with this legislation is Millie
Hamner, email millie.hammer.house@state.co.us.  She committed that she would
support this bill in her committee and subsequently it passed Wednesday morning
by one vote.   This bill will now be taken up by the full house and once passed
by house will be taken up by the Senate.  At this point I would encourage Summit
Bikers to contact their House Representative.  Since Millie Hamner has committed
it may be more beneficial if you vote in another locality outside of Summit
County to contact your representative.  To find your representative's email and
suggested points to raise see the following web page;
http://bicyclecolo.org/articles/open-roads-act-action-alert-judiciary-pg1174.htm.

Bicyclist can look forward to a ciclovia coming to Denver soon.  This is where
they close down the main roads to traffic in the heart of the city and open them
up to biking.  The idea has become an international idea and the move is being
made to bring it to Denver.

On the mountain bike front there are a number of developments around the state
including new trail areas in Boulder and Castle Rock.  Steamboat has a "Biketown
USA" initiative to greatly improve mountain biking there (they stated there are
500 miles of single track) and there are major plans to build a trail network in
Gateway, Colorado similar to Moab.

Like many of you I have not thought of the political aspects of biking but laws
to improve biker's safety and access to ride various areas can and does affect
all of us.  As issues arise that can impact us we will try to make you aware so
we can let our representatives know where we stand on issues.

To all Summit Biking members:
I know that we all are deep into the great powder this season but it still can be time to look ahead.

This is going to be a fun summer, especially with both our Circle the Summit Ride on August 20th and the Quiznos Pro Challenge, starting the next day and finishing Stage 5 (Day 6) in Breckenridge on August 27th.

We will need all the help we can get on both the 20th and 27th, so mark your calendars. Of course, if you can only pick one event to help out at, make it our Circle the Summit Ride on the 20th. That event, after all, is the major fund raiser for Summit Biking. If you can do both, all the better.

To volunteer for the Circle the Summit Ride, please contact Bonnie Guthrie. To volunteer for the Quiznos pro Challenge, register on Quizno's Volunteer Registration Website at:
http://quiznosprochallenge.com/volunteer-registration/

Have a great winter, ski hard, and see you all next summer.
