August 20 & 24 Rides

Hello Summit Bikers,

 

Next week we have rides planned for Monday and Wednesday.  On Monday the ride will be from Idaho Springs to Georgetown and beyond.  Those that would like can ride all the way to Loveland Ski Area.  Plan to be ready to ride at 10 am from the parking lot near Buffalo Restaurant.  To get there go east on I-70 to exit 240.  Go left as you get off this exit on to 13th Ave.  After two blocks turn right on Miner Street.  Turn right on 17th Ave.  Park in the lot near Water Street between 16th Ave and 17th Ave.  Form groups as you arrive back in town for lunch at the Buffalo Restaurant.  Bring a lock for your bike while inside.

 

On Friday August 24 for the Pro Cycle Tour Summit Biking has 15 parking spots (please carpool) reserved at Blue River Town Hall.  Plan to meet at 8:30 ready to ride up Hoosier Pass.  I checked this out in May and from several spots going up Hoosier Pass you will be able to see 4 or 5 hair pin turns as the riders proceed on their most challenging climb of the day.  The Pro Ride leaves Breckenridge at 9:30 am, circles the town twice before heading south to Hoosier Pass.  The plan is for everyone to be at the top of the pass by around 10 am in time for the pro riders to come through.  Particularly nice, the road will be closed for a large part of the time we are climbing. You must get off the road if the lead state police car catches you before you get to the top. If you ride down shortly after the pro riders and chase cars pass you will probably get back to Town Hall before the road opens again, since the state police will have to keep the road closed until the riders pass Alma.

 

On Monday August 27 there will be no ride.

Wednesday Morning Ride

August 13, 2012

This ride will include more than half of the Circle the Summit Century, starting from Dillon.  

We will leave at 9AM from the Dillon Amphitheatre, heading north, down the switchbacks to Silverthorne, out past the Elementary School to Ute Pass.  Those interested in picking up the ride from the elementary school, be ready for us at 9:20.  

We will return to the Dillon Amphitheatre, then head over Swan Mountain.  If I have enough energy and strength, I will continue to Copper, and perhaps up Vail Pass and return to Dillon over the dam.

Round trip to Ute Pass and back to Dillon is 40 miles.(possible, but I will probably go longer)

Add on ride around the Lake over Swan Mountain, 56 miles (most probable)

Go to Copper, instead, and back to Dillon over the Dam, is 69 miles (this is a maybe)

Go all the way to Vail Pass and back to Dillon over the Dam, 81 miles. (this is not likely)

There will be no Friday ride.  It is still not too late to register for the Circle the Summit, on Saturday.

This is a re-post of John Bowyer's Memo from Wednesday.  I was informed that an older blog post of mine from July 5th somehow got resent, causing some confusion for this coming Monday.

Summit Biking -- August 13 Ride

Hello Summit Bikers,

 

On Monday August 13 there will be a dedication ceremony to rename the Swan Mountain section of the recpath for Bob Guthrie at 10 am at Summit Cove where the Swan Mountain section meets the Lowery Section.  This is next to the trailer park at the bottom of the Swan Mountain Section.  In order to coincide our Monday ride with the dedication it has been revised.  For the newer people Bob Guthrie was one of the founders of Summit Biking and did much throughout the county.  His loss was a major loss for the county and Summit Biking.  It is hoped that all members can make this event.

 

Plan to meet at Dillon Amplitheatre at 9:30 am ready to ride.  We will then ride down as a group to the dedication ceremony.  Once the ceremony is over complete the ride over Swan Mountain and around Lake Dillon.  The faster group can add a side trip up to Breckenridge and back through Frisco.  We will have a grill at the picnic so plan to bring something to cook as well as to share with your friends and a drink.

 

Remember to use hand signals and ride safe.

Friday's Ride

A change of venue!!!  

Ever hear of Guanella Pass Road out of Georgetown?  Fran and Barry have organized a ride on this, from what I hear is a fantastic ride.  Newly reconstructed and repaved!  Several lakes are along the way.  We have been invited to join them.  " We are leaving Frisco and Silverthorne at 8am and meeting at the parking lot across from The Happy Cooker in Georgetown.  Fran "

I plan to be there before 8:30AM, and I have room in my car for one more rider.  Email me!

Because we do not want to leave anyone behind, please RSVP to my email address below.  This is an out and back ride, with a lot of climbing, some grades are in the excess of 10 or 12%.  I am not sure of the distance.  

And of course, lunch after.  Bring money.

Wednesday Ride

I am riding a B-paced ride from Dillon Amphitheatre Parking lot, leaving at 9AM, tomorrow, August 8th.  Most likely route will be up Montezuma, back over the Swan Mountain and around the lake.

All are welcome, but C-riders should have their own group.

Monday Group Rides

Comments and feedback we have received suggest we have done a poor job of communicating and implementing the option for people to ride in designated groups if they so desire on our Monday rides. There never was any intent to eliminate the opportunity for everyone to ride their own route at their own pace with whomever they might prefer, but rather to provide an additional option for those who prefer a more organized group or are new to our group and would appreciate some ride partners.

As always, everyone is welcome to take their own route and meet back for the Pot Luck as always. In addition there normally will be leaders available if anyone is new or otherwise would prefer to ride with a more structured group. Summit Biking strives to be an inclusive group that welcomes a range of cycling preferences and objectives. 

We appreciate the feedback. Keep it coming!

Independence Pass Ride

Sy Katz mentioned that he and several others are planning to ride from twin lakes to Aspen and back on Wed. Aug. 8. Other Summit Bikers are welcome to join them. the ride can be shortened by going to the summit of Independence pass and back to Twin Lakes rather than all the way to Aspen. They plan to start at 9:00 in Twin Lakes. Weather predicted to be warm and dry. Contact Sy at skskatz@comcast.net for more information.

Friday Morning

How about a 40 to 45 mile ride in the direction of Breck, leaving from the Dillon Amphitheatre at 9AM.  I mapped out a ride over Swan Mountain, to Tiger Road, up and down the hill at Estates Drive, then up and over the Highlands.  Then follow up Airport Road, toward Route 9 south. Depending on our mileage and weather, we could go as far as Blue River, but that looks like it might be more than 50 miles by the time we return to the high school, and path up to the Hospital, north on the Peninsula, across the dam and back to the start.  

This will be a B-paced ride, with frequent regrouping.   C-paced riders may be dropped, so if you join us, bring a couple friends for your pace. You can also eliminate some of the hill climbs by going directly into Breck, instead of Tiger Road.

So, meet at 8:45, click and roll at 9.

Summit Biking -- August 6 Ride

We will once again venture outside Summit County to East Vail and attempt once again to either do the Vail Pass or Vail Trail. The ride will be from Big horn Park in East Vail, starting at 9:30am.  There will be a grill available so plan to bring something to cook, a drink and a dish to share with your friends. For those who would like to car pool meet at the west end of Frisco at the parking lot at 8:50 am.  Multiple rides are available from Big Horn, including West Vail Pass and the Vail Trail trough Vail and on to Minturn.

Directions to Big Horn Park: Go West to exit 180 in East Vail. Get off on the right and turn left going under I-70 on Bighorn Road. Go right on Streamside Circle. Stay on Streamside Circle and turn right on Meadow Drive. Bighorn Park is on the left ahead.
